And the readers were right – State Senator Mike Stack will be the first lieutenant governor candidate on television.
His buy begins on Tuesday, May 6 in Pittsburgh with 2000 gross rating points, and then expands into the Philadelphia, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Harrisburg markets on Thursday, May 8 at the 1000 GRP level. He will stay up through May 20.
The television campaign will cost approximately $850,000 and Stack is the only candidate able to spend so much in this race after drastically outraising his competition in fundraising.
The high-quality ad begins with Stack talking about his grandfather who served in Congress during the passage of the first minimum wage and other progressive pieces of legislation.
“A right wing group gave me a 0 rating because i want to tax millionaires and gas drillers to help fund public education. I sponsored marriage equality, a ban on assault weapons and I’ll always protect women’s rights,” Stack says. “I’m Mike Stack and I believe our Democratic values are worth fighting for.”
This 30-second spot will run in each media market, and the campaign is considering another ad to run in select markets.
For the Democratic nomination, Stack faces Bradford County Commissioner Mark Smith, former Congressman Mark Critz, State Rep. Brandon Neuman and Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinski.

Very impressive ad. Mike Stack is clearly the front-runner for the Democratic Nomination for Lt. Governor. Very smart to mention his Grandfather’s service as a Congressmen who worked with FDR. This will sell very well to traditional Democratic voters in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, York, and Philadelphia. As someone who took a serious beating from Senator Stack in electoral politics, I can say with personal knowledge that Mike Stack is a formidable opponent who should not be underestimated. With Jay Paterno out of the race and the number one ballot position in the upcoming May Primary, Stack has clearly “emerged as the one to beat”. Stack’s got it easily. Sorry, but anybody who thinks Koplinski or the throwback Critz has a shot in hell is delusional. I feel bad for Koplinski because he’s worked hard but Stack has money, geography, ballot position, and governing experience on his side. Plus, he doesn’t have the albatross of Harrisburg hanging around his neck.

Recent polling says 70% of Allegheny County Democratic primary voters are pro-choice. In the last County Exec election 52% identified themselves a liberal and in the City of Pittsburgh the number climbs to 58% liberals.
As for not voting for someone from Philly, in the last LG race Saidel barely lost to Conklin in Allegheny County and Saidel won Beaver county.
I am a Koplinsky supporter because I made an early commitment but I applaud Stack for taking such a public stand on progressive issues and think his commercial is very good and will likely be very effective in Western PA.
That ad won’t play well in western Pa. A lot of Dems are pro-life and gun owners. Another minus western Pa won’t vote for someone from Philadelphia.
No question this is a very good acting performance but just look at his issues! Doesn’t he realise how much we Pennsylvanians cling to our gods and our guns? If only he had made the case for traditional marriage, gun ownership, fracking and despoiling the environment for good paying jobs, and defense spending, he could have made some headway. Only Mr. Critz has the right issues to be a bridge to the past glory of the democratic party.
This guy is made for TV. No wonder he is a card carrying member of SAG-AFTRA. A good messenger selling a good message. Great spot.
