Marino Challenger Agrees with Bush

Democratic businessman Phil Scollo, who’s running for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 10th District, wants supporters to know he agrees with Bush. Jeb Bush, that is.

Scollo, of Pike County, is challenging freshman Rep. Tom Marino (R-Lycoming).

The former Florida Governor made headlines this week when he suggested that inflexibility and hostility to compromise have brought the Republican party away from the direction of his father and Ronald Reagan:

“Ronald Reagan would have, based on his record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground, as would my dad, they would have a hard time if you define the Republican party, and I don’t, as having an orthodoxy that doesn’t allow for disagreement, doesn’t allow for finding some common ground… they got a lot of stuff done with a lot of bipartisan support…The political system today is hyperpartisan. Both sides are at fault.”

In a fundraising email Thursday, Scollo complained of the partisan nature of American politics.

“Too often in today’s politics we find fault with people in the opposing political party without noting the times when we agree.”

Like Bush, Scollo blames gridlock on both parties.

“But Washington is deadlocked — even on issues like this where everyone agrees — because our hyperpartisan system rewards those who refuse to work together. The time has come to fix this problem.”
