MAYOR LAUNCHES CONTEST ASKING STUDENTS: ‘WHAT’S YOUR PROMISE TO PITTSBURGH’?

(PITTSBURGH)  Oct. 18, 2010 – Mayor Luke Ravenstahl along with support from the Pittsburgh Promise and Pittsburgh Public Schools today launched a contest to encourage City public school  high school students to think of creative and inspiring ways to return the “promise” back to their communities. The contest, called “My Promise to Pittsburgh,” invites a student or a group of students to create a video or written essay with photos that communicates how they will use the gift of the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program to give back to their community.

“The future of our City rests largely on the vitality of our public school system and in the future promise of job opportunities for our young people,” Ravenstahl said. “The time is now for our students to think about their dreams and their plan to be successful adults who take advantage of the Pittsburgh Promise and make their City a better place to live.”

Pittsburgh public school high school students have until Nov. 24 to submit to the City their “promise.”  Members of the first-placed entry will receive Pittsburgh Penguins tickets for all members and a guest; lunch with Mayor Luke Ravenstahl; and the playing of the winning entry on the City’s new Facebook page, webpage, and City-Cable Channel.

The top five most original and unique submissions will be placed on the City of Pittsburgh’s Facebook page for people to view and vote. The City, Pittsburgh Promise and Public Schools will choose the top five entries, based on the following criteria:
–          Clear, succinct and well-explained response to “What’s your promise to Pittsburgh”?
–          Quality and presentation of answer
–          Creativity and enthusiasm

From Dec. 3 to Dec. 17 at 4 p.m., the contest “voting” will take place on the City’s Facebook page. The entry with the most Facebook “Likes” after two weeks will be announced as the winner. The City of Pittsburgh’s current 2,000+ fans will be encouraged to vote. Friends, families, and Pittsburghers are also invited to join the City’s Facebook page and vote.

Contest Rules:
Students may participate individually or in a group of no more than five students. Video submissions are preferred, but essays with photos are also accepted.
