MAYOR NUTTER AND TEMPLE UNIVERSITY HOST NATIONWIDE MAYORS’ TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT

Philadelphia, October 4, 2010 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter is welcoming more than 60 mayors, chief information officers, and other government and nonprofit representatives to the Mayors’ Technology Summit, which the City is hosting in partnership with Temple University’s Fox School of Business and its Center for Competitive Government.  This is the first year that the Summit is being held in Philadelphia.

The two-day Summit, The Digital City, provides a forum for government officials and private industry to focus on the role of technology in promoting government efficiency and transparency, human networks, environmental sustainability and economic development.  

Mayors and chief information officers from as close as Reading, Scranton and York – and as far as New Orleans, Phoenix and Seattle – are gathering here for the sixth Mayors’ Technology Summit, the first to be held in Philadelphia. Today’s keynote speakers include U.S. Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009.

“I am pleased to host Temple University’s Digital City conference in Philadelphia and am excited to join mayors and technology leaders across the country for this important conversation about how we can use effectively technology to address our most critical challenges,” said Mayor Nutter.
 
The series of Summits, created by the Fox School’s Center for Competitive Government, has provided forums where government representatives, industry executives and academics can discuss important topics related to technology and economic development as they explore the potential of public-private partnerships.

“The Fox School is privileged to be part of this important discussion among city and state executives as they explore new and innovative ideas to the challenges they face as they work to improve efficiency and quality of life in their communities,” Fox School of Business Dean M. Moshe Porat said.

During a series of panel discussions and receptions held at City Hall and the Fox School’s state-of-the-art Alter Hall, officials will discuss topics such as urban networks, technology’s impact on homeland security and sustainability, and mobility solutions for state and local governments.

Today, Mayor Nutter is scheduled to moderate a discussion on “Using IT as an Economic Development Engine” with panelists including Allan Frank, the City’s Chief Technology Officer and head of the Division of Technology, and Alan Greenberger, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development.

The 2010 Mayors’ Technology Summit is sponsored by AT&T, Verizon, IBM, Avaya, HP, Cisco, KPMG, Comcast and Dell.
