McAndrew Is Dems’ Choice To Replace DeLuca

Joe McAndrew tabbed as Dems' nominee in HD32.

Joe McAndrew, the Democratic committee chair in Penn Hills, is the choice of Allegheny County Democratic Party leaders as their nominee to replace the late Anthony DeLuca in the 32nd state House District.

McAndrew outlasted seven other candidates as the County leaders used a ranked-choice voting process to make their selection. The choice must still be ratified by the state party.

“I am honored today to have been named the Democratic nominee for House District 32,” tweeted McAndrew. “Election day is on February 7 and we will be working every day to ensure a democratic majority in the state house this spring.”

The ranked-choice process was used because party bylaws required a candidate to receive an outright majority of votes cast. With an eight-candidate field, that could have resulted in repeated rounds of voting that could have stretched until midnight or beyond.

The expedited process took a little more than an hour and – with just one error on a ballot – showed that the different approach was easily digestible for the committee.

Republicans will choose their nominee on Saturday and speculation surrounds Carrie DelRosso, who unsuccessfully ran for lieutenant governor. Two years ago, she defeated long-time Democratic House leader Frank Dermody for the seat in the 33rd District. Reapportionment drew her Oakmont home out of the district, sending her into the statewide contest.

DelRosso has shared articles about a possible run in the 32nd on her Facebook page, raising the prospects of her interest in returning to Harrisburg.

Green Party candidate Queonia Livingston says she also will be on the ballot.

The Allegheny County Dems will hold nomination elections for the openings in the 34th and 35th Districts on Saturday. The Allegheny Republicans have indicated they will meet on the same date to select candidates for all three special elections.

  1. I do hope for Abigail Salisbury gets the HD 34 Democratic party nod and a female candidate for HD 35 Democratic party nod too and for Carrie Delrosso for the Republican nod in HD32
