The field for Philadelphia mayor may have just increased by one.
Former lieutenant governor Mike Stack made his intentions known to the Philadelphia Democratic Party during a recent meeting of party leadership, according to chair Bob Brady.
“Stack announced,” Brady told WHYY. “He didn’t announce it to the public but he announced to us [party ward leaders and committee people], he said he’s running for mayor.”
The 57-year-old Stack served in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 2001-15 and was elected lieutenant governor in the fall of 2014. He ran for reelection in 2018 but was defeated in the Democratic primary by John Fetterman, now a U.S. Senator.
Stack entered a race for Philadelphia City Council in 2019, but withdrew after drawing a bad ballot position in a crowded field.
After his departure from public service, he ventured into stand-up comedy on the west coast, utilizing a stage name of Mikey Stacks.
Brady also confirmed rumors that State Senator Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia) is taking a serious look at the packed field of candidates who will run for the city’s top executive position.
“Vince Hughes, I talked to, my senator, he said he’s not made up his mind yet, and he’s looking at it. We’ll see what happens.”
Brady said the city party will not make any endorsement in the race for mayor, leaving the choice to individual ward leaders to support the candidate of their choice.
Stack would join an already crowded field of 10 candidates, including:
- Warren Bloom Sr., Pastor
- Amen Brown, PA State Representative for the 10th District
- Jeff Brown, Businessman
- James DeLeon, Philadelphia Municipal judge from 1964-2021
- Allan Domb, At-large Philadelphia City Councilmember
- Derek S. Green, At-large Philadelphia City Councilmember
- Helen Gym, At-large Philadelphia City Councilmember
- Maria Quiñones- Sánchez, Philadelphia City Councilmember for the 7th district
- Cherelle Parker, Philadelphia City Councilmember for the 9th district
- Rebecca Rhynhart, Philadelphia city controller
The candidates will participate in a Democratic Mayoral Candidate Forum beginning at 6 p.m. tonight at Saint Joseph’s University. The forum will be live streamed on 6abc.com.

There’s been a couple of forums and interviews for the Mayor’s race.
People keep looking for the grown-ups who are ready to be Mayor immediately.
No one know for sure where things will settle…but folks keep landing on Maria Quinones-Sanchez and Derek Green as the most serious and best prepared to lead Philly…
With this many candidates in the race or entering…a shakeout is bound to happen.
Those who leave will end up backing the most viable candidates left.
