Morning Buzz: Election Results Rundown

HangoverSome big changes are coming to several places around PA. Check here for all of the results of yesterday’s busy local elections, which were marked by low turnout. Good morning politicos, here’s the Buzz.

Peduto Wins Pittsburgh Mayor Primary: The campaign is over, and Bill Peduo has won the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Pittsburgh.

McVay Defeats Waters for Dem Superior Court Nom: Jack McVay defeated Joseph Waters in the Democratic primary for a seat on Pennsylvania’s Superior Court. It was the only contested statewide race Tuesday. He’ll face Republican Vic Stabile.

Dems Go 2 for 2 in State House Races: Democrats won 2 state House special elections Tuesday night in safe districts. Dan Miller, an attorney, will replace Matt Smith in Allegheny County. Economic Development official Kevin Schreiber will replace Eugene DePasquale in York.

McIlhinney Ally and “Modernization” Win Bucks Co Booze Proxy Battle: Patricia Bachtle won the Bucks Co. Prothonotary race which pitted Sen. Chuck McIlhinney against Bucks GOP Chairwoman Pat Poprik, and was in turn a proxy battle in the state fight over booze privatization.

Papenfuse Wins Harrisburg Mayoral Primary: Pennsylvania’s beleaguered capital city will have a new Mayor. Bookstore owner Eric Papenfuse defeated incumbent Linda Thompson and City Controller Dan Miller, and will be the Democratic nominee.

Dahlkemper Unseats Grossman for Erie Executive: The results are in, and former Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper has unseated incumbent Erie County Executive Barry Grossman in the Democratic primary 52% to 48%.

Butkovitz Wins Re-election for Philly Controller: The results are in, and incumbent Alan Butkovitz has claimed a victory in the Philadelphia Controller race, defeating Brett Mandel 61% to 31% with 95% of precincts reporting.

Courtright Gets the Dems Nod for Scranton Mayor: Scranton City Tax Collector Bill Courtright will move onto the general election, winning the primary election 50-42 over challenger Elizabeth Randol with 94 percent of precincts reporting.

Donchez Wins Bethlehem Mayoral Primary: Bob Donchez won the Democratic nod for Bethlehem Mayor, defeating fellow city councilman Willie Reynolds.

Callahan Wins Democratic Primary For Northampton Co. Executive: The results are in, and John Callahan has won the Democratic nomination for Northampton County Executive, defeating Lamont McClure and Glenn Reibman.

Platts, Flannelly Head For November Rematch in York Judicial Race: Former Congressman Todd Platts and Judge Michael Flannelly have won the GOP and Democratic nominations, respectively, in the York Co. Court of Common Pleas race.

Pittsburgh City Council Winners and Losers: The Pittsburgh City Council election results are finally in, and PoliticsPA has them for you.

Shapiro Rules out Bids for Guv, PA-13, Launches Statewide PAC: Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro is a rising star in Pa. politics, but he won’t seek a promotion this cycle. He’s taken a pass on bids for Governor and Congress and instead announced the formation of a statewide PAC.

Former Justice Orie Melvin Files Appeal: Disgraced former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin filed an appeal today to the Superior Court for her public corruption conviction, the Pittsburgh newspapers are reporting.

Corbett Holds Off on Common Core: After contentious committee hearings, the Corbett administration has decided to delay Common Core Standards implementation until after July 1st.
