Northampton DA Morganelli Ponders LG Bid

John Morganelli, the Northampton County District Attorney and former candidate for Pa. Attorney General, is weighing a bid for Lieutenant Governor.

“This is not an announcement, but I am considering running for Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania in 2014,” he told PoliticsPA via email. “I believe that as a moderate Democrat from the Lehigh Valley, I would compliment any of our prospective candidates for governor.”

He said he’ll make a definitive announcement later this year.

If he gets in, he’d join Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinski and Bradford County Commissioner Mark Smith. State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montco) is also considering a run.

“I still have a solid statewide organization from my 2008 campaign for attorney general, and a solid campaign fund with cash on hand of $260,000,” he continued, and noted that his prosecutorial background would be an asset. “I have strong labor support, and would be able to articulate the case against Corbett’s re-election from a law enforcement perspective including his handling of the Sandusky investigation.”

Morganelli fell 6.7% short of Tom Corbett in the 2008 AG race. Jim Eisenhower defeated him by 1.7% in the 2000 Democratic primary and 4.8% in 2004.

His claim to fame is his tough approach on illegal immigration – a stance that has caused him trouble in his own party at times.

  1. We need a Lt. Governor who is tough on public corruption. He recently allowed an elected Borough Council woman of 20 years in West Easton, PA to escape felony charges for her role in a leaked LTCF application, which belonged to her long time political rival and personal enemy, Tricia Mezzacappa. The Councilwoman, Kelly Gross of West Easton destroyed the careers of 3 Deputy Sheriffs, and walked away unscathed. 1 Deputy was charged with a felony after Gross coaxed and conned him to release the document. Bad call on Morganelli’s part not to charge Gross with Felony conspiracy.

  2. As a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT it would be nice that moderate democrats like John Morganelli get exposed for what they really are….in-the-close Republicans.

  3. This guy is not a moderate. He is as conservative as they come. Pro-Life, pro-guns and racist. If Pennsylvania wants to replace Jim Cawley with someone even more conservative, vote John Morganelli.

  4. I can see a Castor/Morganelli ticket coming together! They both ran for AG and both lost. Stranger things could happen!

  5. I highly doubt Daylin is considering a run for lt gov. I think he’s getting a chuckle about the speculation/rumor.

  6. The funniest part of this is now Corbett can get banged around from every side: a game of Whack-a-Mole.
