PA-12: Cambria County Dems Back McClelland

Businesswoman Erin McClelland earned the endorsement of the Cambria County Democratic Party in her primary battle against John Hugya.

“From the beginning of this campaign, I’ve felt at home in Cambria County,” McClelland said after winning the support in a vote Wednesday night. “I know the rich history of the Democratic Party here in Cambria, and I’m honored to be a part of that legacy.”

Hugya is a former Chief of Staff to long-serving Congressman John Murtha, and is a Cambria County native.

Despite Hugya’s political ties to the region, McClelland has had no trouble earning local support. Her endorsements already include the Allegheny County Democratic Committee, the Allegheny County Labor Council, the Beaver County Labor Council, and a score of local elected officials including Allegheny County State Representatives Dom Costa, Joe Marksosek, Frank Demody, and Adam Ravenstahl, and Erin Molchany, Beaver County State Representatives Jaret Gibbons and Rob Matzie, Beaver County Commissioner Joe Spanik, Beaver County Commissioner Tony Amadio, Beaver Falls Mayor George Quay, Lawrence County Commissioner Steve Craig, Westmoreland County Commissioner Ted Kopas, Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court.

McClelland and Hugya are sparring for the opportunity to face Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-Allegheny).

The district leans Republican, and the incumbent has been outpacing his Democratic challengers handily in fundraising. By the end of the fourth quarter, Rothfus had $872,447 on hand, McClelland had $20,847, and Hugya had $25,469.59.
