PA-13: Leach Attacks All Three Opponents In New Ad

Daylin-Leach-portrait-2013-loresMost candidates prefer not to appear in their negative ads, letting ominous voice-overs do the damage for them, Daylin Leach is not most candidates.

In the State Senator’s latest commercial in his campaign for the Democratic nomination in PA-13, he personally attacks the records of all three of his opponents.

“My opponents have positions that I could never support,” Leach begins. “Brendan Boyle opposed a woman’s right to choose, I’m strongly pro-choice. Marjorie Margolies would cut Social Security benefits. I say the wealthiest should pay their fair share to protect Social Security. And Val Arkoosh is massively funded by groups that fought Obamacare.”

Of course, these candidates would likely all vehemently disagree with these statements. Boyle has repeatedly asserted that he supports Roe v. Wade. Margolies’ Social Security proposals are from 1994 and the candidate has stated she has “evolved” away from them and no longer supports cutting benefits. Finally, Val Arkoosh was part of the Healthcare for America Now coalition that fought for passing Obamacare.

The spot is an effort to clearly stake Leach as the most liberal candidate in the race as the 13th district is very progressive. The Cook Political Report rates it a D+13 seat.

“If you want Republicans politics vote for one of them,” Leach concludes. “But if you want a fearless fighter who’s been called the ‘Liberal Lion’ of Pennsylvania, I’m your choice.”

  1. This was the same tactic used by MM (i.e, attack everybody), and she was roundly criticized for doing so. I can’t understand how Leach is able to get away with the same sort of behavior.

  2. If you eliminate Margolies and Boyle from the mix right off the bat (as all good Democrats should), it leaves you with a tough choice between Leach and Arkoosh. Arkoosh talks a good game, says all the right things — but has never held elective office, never legislated, and is backed by big-money MDs that are staying in the shadows. On the other hand, I really like Leach’s in-your-face style. I want somebody who’s not afraid to tell the right-wing cretins here and in DC to go to hell – with a smile, a joke, and a wink. Sort of a male Rachel Maddow. Obama’s failure hasn’t been that he’s too liberal – it’s that he is too concilliatory. The BS from the right won’t stop until we start electing people who have the cojones to actually call it BS.

  3. Next Title to a headline might read, ” Daylin Holds Breath”

  4. My guess is that tracking polls have prompted this desperation-move, for it’s overtly incorrect.

  5. Senator Leach seems to be following a strategy pretty similar to Governor Corbett these days.

Throw everything against the wall and see what sticks…

  6. Any Democrat who’s been paying attention knows that the one candidate in the 13th who is not tied to Big Labor, Big Money, or the Party Bosses is Daylin Leach. Which is why he doesn’t get traction with traditional party leaders. And why he has such enthusiastic support among real grass-roots Democrats. Leach’s win this year will be another reminder that real Democrats want candidates with real Democratic values.

  7. What happens to the PA Senate without Daylin’s voice if he goes to DC?

The district is pretty close D vs R and the special election would be in 2015, which is not a good year for Dem turnout.

Is it worth having Daylin in congress, over Val, if it means flipping a PA senate seat to the Republicans?

What would be the difference in voting record between Daylin and Val vs the voting record difference between Daylin and a Republican holding his Senate seat?

Which scenario would have the biggest impact for PA voters?

  8. Anyone who calls out Daylin for his “personality” has clearly never met the man in person. He is the funniest, warmest, and most empathetic candidate in the race – by far. He would shake things up in DC to a degree that the other go-along-get-along people could never hope to achieve. And of course, that is exactly what scares the hell out of the Democratic establishment: a politician they can’t control. That’s why you see Johnny Doc, Bobby Brady, Eddie Rendell and Mistress Hillary all backing their malleable favorites. We need more people like Liz Warren, Bernie Sanders and Alan Grayson in congress, and fewer Harry Reids and Naancy Pelosis.

  9. Leach is crippled by the fact that Arkoosh is in the race, plus his own personality. I think he’s the one person who CAN’T win this race now. That’s why you see him doing things like this. I had actually hoped he’d be the nominee. He’s too socially liberal for the Northeast Philadelphians in his district, and it’d make the GOP voter drives in those areas easier.
