PA-17: Cartwright Releases First Re-Election Ad (VIDEO)

Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright released his first televised ad for re-election just one week before Election Day.

Cartwright, whose 17th district represents a large portion of Northeastern Pennsylvania, used the spot demonstrate how he can navigate the D.C. political system to best represent the issues of Pennsylvania.

The commercial, titled “Same Values” urges voters to remember that while Cartwright works in D.C., a place he describes as full of “traffic, crowds, noise, [and] arguing,” he reflects the values of his Pennsylvania constituents.

“Here at home, we know what’s really important” Cartwright said as he stands in front of his house in Moosic, Pennsylvania.

Important to Cartwright is valuing veterans, creating jobs and closing the Halliburton Loophole. The loophole, which exempts companies drilling for natural gas from disclosing the chemicals involved in fracking operations that would normally be required under federal clean water laws, has long been a focus for Cartwright.

In March 2013, just three months since taking office, Cartwright introduced the Breathe Act to directly address the Halliburton Loophole and its potential dangers to his home state.

“I serve you down here [in D.C.], but my values come from right here at home” Cartwright asserts.

Rep. Cartwright will face Republican David Moylan in the upcoming November 4th election. The Rothenberg Political Report currently classifies the race as “safe Democratic.”

The Congressman unseated Democratic incumbent Tim Holden in the 2012 election after redistricting included Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, two areas with a strong Democratic lean that previously belonged to the 11th congressional district. Prior to the 2002 election, the 17th district had been a Republican stronghold for 20 years.
