PA-6: Parrish Raises $100k for House Bid

Mike Parrish is the lone Democrat officially in the race for Pennsylvania’s 6th congressional district and he currently has $103,206 on hand.

Parrish raised the money in 37 days, receiving $62,756 from individual donors as well as $250 donation from Deep Blue PAC, a committee that former congressman Joe Sestak is an affiliate of. Parrish also donated $35,200 of his own money to the campaign.

Pennsylvania’s 6th congressional district became a highly contested race after Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-Chester) declared that he would not seek re-election after holding the seat since 2002. The seat has been given an R+2 rating by the Cook Political Index, meaning that either party has a legitimate chance of winning the seat.

Because Parrish declared his candidacy before Gerlach announced that he would retire, he is the only candidate with a finance report thus far. Other candidates decided to run after the announcement was made in the first quarter of 2014.

Parrish has received flak for only recently declaring himself a Democrat after years of ties to the Republican party. He donated money to the presidential campaigns of John McCain and Mitt Romney, and also gave money to Tom Corbett during his 2010 bid for governor.

The former West Point graduate and current CEO of Daleco Resources has focused on issues surrounding military benefits and congressional obstinance, thus remaining very much in the center and avoiding partisan disputes.

But liberal Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has officially backed Parrish, holding a fundraiser for his campaign on February 6th in Philadelphia, causing some to be skeptical about Parish’s move to the left.

“Apparently Michael Parrish’s political soul is for sale,” said Ian Prior, spokesman of the NRCC.

Parrish’s main challenger seems to be Republican Ryan Costello, the current Chairman of the Chester County Board of Commissioners, who announced his candidacy less than a month ago. A recent PoliticsPA reader poll showed that Costello was the candidate that the most people thought the Pa. Republicans should endorse.

The race should be an interesting one to follow considering that Gerlach never won the seat with more than 52.10% of the vote, with the exception of the Republican wave year of 2010*, until the district was redrawn in 2012 to include more Republican-leaning areas in Berks and Lebanon County.

*This article originally omitted the fact that Rep. Gerlach received more than 52% in the 2010 election.

  1. Is this really Parrish selling out or the DCCC?

Rumor has it that the DNC is abandoning plans to take back the House and focus on saving the Senate. So, if they can back a candidate who raised some money, without having to do any heavy lifting from their own resources, the DNC bean-counters aren’t going to look too closely at past political affiliations.
