PA-9: Shuster Attacks Obama in Latest Ad

Congressman Bill Shuster released his latest campaign ad today in which he takes direct aim at President Obama.

The ad is not-coincidentally timed to President Obama’s visit to Pittsburgh today.

The spot focuses on the closure of the Hatfield Ferry Power Station in Greene County. The plant was closed by its owners, FirstEnergy, who stated that the plant didn’t clear the EPA standards for its local grid operator. As a result, the plant was too costly to maintain.

Rep. Shuster, however, sees this as an instance of the EPA’s crusade against workers.

“This facility is closed because of President Obama’s policies on energy,” Shuster said. “It’s been shut down in direct response to President Obama’s attack on coal and his out-of-control EPA.”

The Congressman promised to fight against these types of EPA regulations in Congress.

The commercial featured several of the successful hallmarks of negative political advertisements, including scary music, shaky-cam, and short, foreboding clips of the President and Vice President talking about coal-powered plants.

Rep. Shuster even filmed the ad outside of the chained-up fences of the plant as heavy snow was falling. The entire subtext of the spot seem designed to convey the message that it sure is cold outside and wouldn’t you like some coal-powered heat?

In other energy related news in Southwest PA, Gamesa announced they’re closing their wind turbine plant that’s on the border of Shuster’s district because of Congressional inaction to renew the Wind Energy Production Tax Credit. The Sierra Club accused Shuster of picking his energy battles based on political contributions.

Rep. Shuster is currently facing primary challenge from U.S. Coast Guard veteran and businessman Art Halvorson.

  1. This guy is too busy being drunk and grabbing a$$ in Mercersburg! The “Shuster” name disgusts me. Proven Conservative? LOL!

  2. Gee, where has Shuster been all this time? If this was really important to him, you’d think that he would have done something about it sooner.

I guess this is another example of Bill’s “proven conservative leadership”- sitting on his hands until he has to worry about getting reelected.

Maybe he was distracted by Hookers & Blow.
