PA-9: Three Republicans and One Democrat File

Rep. Shuster
Rep. Shuster

As reported a few weeks ago, Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Blair) already reached the necessary 1,000 signatures to get on the 9th District ballot, making him the first candidate in the state to do so in any race.

In the time since, he more than tripled his signature count.

As of petition-filing time yesterday at 5 pm, Shuster received over 3,700 signatures from his district to get him on the ballot. His campaign manager, Sean Joyce, said that the Congressman is very happy with his constituents’ support.

“All of our Shuster Booster volunteers deserve a huge thanks for working so hard to allow Congressman Shuster to become the first candidate on the ballot not only in PA-9, but the first candidate on the ballot in the entire state- for any elected office,” said Joyce. “But our army of volunteers didn’t stop with the first 1,000 signatures, they were able to collect well over three and a half times the required amount of signatures and submit over 3,700 signatures to put Congressman Shuster on the ballot and show a strong groundswell of grassroots support.”

Also boasting a strong grassroots support system, Shuster’s opponent and former Coast Guard Captain Art Halvorson filed roughly three times the amount of signatures he needed. He reported over 3,000 signatures.

Tea Party-member Halvorson’s campaign called his grassroots-style organization “the tip of the spear for the remainder of the campaign” in gearing up for the May primary.

“My deepest thanks go out to the committed volunteers who braved bitter weather to gather these signatures,” said Halvorson. “This effort has been a great way for us to prepare for the primary in May. We have been a true grassroots organization from the start, and we are going to continue mobilizing patriots eager to reach out to voters all over the 9th District and show them that I will be a limited government Congressman.”

Also likely to appear on the Republican ballot is Travis Schooley, and he reports filing around 2,300 signatures. 2014 is the third time that Schooley has tried to get on the ballot, and his previous two efforts failed. This year looks like the first time voters will see him in the primary.

Alanna Hartzok, co-direct of the Earth Rights Institute, just managed to make it onto the Democratic ballot with 1,330 signatures. She previously ran against Shuster as a Green Party candidate in 2001.

On May the 21st when Bill Shuster has been narrowly reelected with less than 50% of the vote because Travis Fooley siphoned off just enough votes from Halvorson to let Bill slip by, I’ll be waiting to hear from you and him about how much his candidacy has advanced the cause of liberty.

I actually did get a chance to hear Travis speak, and I was not impressed at all. He rambled on incoherently about his children and his ancestors and never said a word about what he believes in, what he will do in Congress, or why I should support him.

If we want to finally be rid of the Shuster dynasty, we must unite behind the opponent who actually has a realistic chance of beating him- Art Halvorson.

  2. If Travis is the reason Beltway Bill stays in office this time, Mr. Schooly will not be able to win a race for Dog catcher in the future.

  3. The time has come to support true liberty. It is clear the only son of liberty is Travis Schooly please look into this and cast your vote.

If you love liberty and freedom you must not support a person that will give up freedom for for so called security. Both Bill and Art will trade liberty for security.

  4. This should be a fun race to watch. I hope the two opponents to Beltway Bill do not split the vote.

  5. If I were Shuster I would be concerned that my 2 primary opponents gathered significant numbers of signatures during the petition process. Anything can happen with a 3 way primary.
