PA AFL-CIO Unveils Endorsements

PA-AFL-CIO-logoDuring their 42nd annual Constitutional Convention, the PA  AFL-CIO announced their endorsements for this year’s primary election.

In order win the group’s support, a candidate must meet a threshold of 67% of the votes cast by the Executive Board members.

“Working families need public officials who will fight for middle class jobs and an economy that doesn’t leave people behind,” said President Richard Bloomingdale. “The candidates we endorsed stand with workers on fights to protect pensions, raise the minimum wage, fund public schools and more. We commit our time, resources, and votes to helping them give us a state legislature and United States Congress  that shuns the selfish interests of Wall Street and corporate America and puts working families first.”

“With this outstanding slate of candidates ready to take their message of change to the voters of Pennsylvania, we are ready to join them on the battle lines with an aggressive program of support reaching voters in their homes, on their phones, through their mail boxes and at their places of work,” Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder stated. “There needs to be real change in Harrisburg and Washington and we are going to do all we can to make that happen.”

  1. I have been exploring for a little for any high quality articles or blog posts in this kind of area . Exploring in Yahoo I finally stumbled upon this website. Studying this information So i am happy to show that I’ve an incredibly good uncanny feeling I came upon exactly what I needed. I such a lot no doubt will make sure to don’t fail to remember this website and provides it a glance on a constant basis.

  2. AFL-CIO endorsed Margo because they felt as though she deserved it because she went to work this week. They also supported Mark Cowen because he only put in for 4 days per diem. They both deserve the lack luster endorsement that brings zero dollars and no one living in district.

  3. AFSCME brothers and Sisters our endorsed candidate is Josh Shapiro for Attorney General.

  4. SEPA Dem-

I think they are doing endorsements only for seats with Primary challenges. Parrish vanquished his primary challenger (or rather she vanquished herself).

Note: the absence of Brady, Cartwright and McClelland who don’t have challengers either.

  5. Re: U.S. Congress, PA-2: Chaka Fattah, they’re kidding I hope. Dwight Evans should have received this endorsement.

Re: U.S. Congress, PA-6: They forgot Mike Parrish.

Re: Labor Thugs: Really!! Next time you get a Holiday off, make sure to THANK a “Union Member”.

  6. DelcoDemWoman-

I didn’t that I didn’t have a polling memo, but rather than I haven’t seen any polling numbers on the race (from either campaign or anyone else). But, I am well aware of the committee support that Sekela has as well as hearing that a lot of them were turned off by Margo during the judge race.

As for Joe, I know that duplicitous carpetbagger all too well. I know how he betrayed us on the Iraq War funding votes, and how he’s betrayed down-ticket candidates every election. He really enjoys having his ass kissed. Make sure you get both cheeks next time you see him.

You finish your lunch by 11:30am ?

  7. Amazing coincidence. All of Big Labor’s endorsements went to Democrats! Wow.

  8. Lol Dave Diano all fired up with no where to go. I said AFLCIO had polling memo, not you. Although Coles campaigned heavily for the Republican judge, Margo’s husband still won Sekela’s precinct the 7:9 in fact won every precinct in the 164th. You have those numbers on your Voter Whatever software, I’m sure. You are delusional about candidates you don’t like – Joe Sestak. You make a thousand invalid points a day. Sorry Dave I think almost all commentators (real names and code names) on this post know you are wrong on your predictions every year. Some of us have a life and can’t spend the day posting on sites and responding to every commentator, you are hilarious, though. Case in point, I’m at lunch but going back to work and leave you to talk to and respond to yourself. And we all know you will! ROTFLMAO

  9. Bill,
Committee people support the candidates who give them their time and attention as they become more irrelevant in the political process. And people hide behind fake names because they have day jobs and don’t like a documented account of their political feelings for all to see. But this is my real name so I am totally not a part of that.

  10. I must laugh at people who hide behind made up names to comment. the facts are simple. There is a reason a super majority of the committee member of Delaware County, Chester County, Montgomery Counties all endorsed Mary Ellen Balchunis, there are solid reasons she has the endorsement of every elected offical in all 5 counties that are endorsing, There is a reason she was invited to training and support from the PCCC , which earned her an invite to speak at the Democrasy Spring group after leg one of their march, at Catania park in Ridley Park, She has the endorsement of the state AFL-CIO, DFA Montegomery County, SEIU 688, and most resently NOW both in Pa and National. Her opponent has support in Washington because he has money. plain and simple.

  11. DelcoDemWoman-

    Margo, is that you? 🙂

I haven’t seen any poll numbers for the 164th, but Sekela’s campaign has several advantages that Billy Smith did not have in 2014:

    1) Sekela pretty much has all the Billy supporters, and picked up former supporters of Margo’s 2014 campaign: notably Selela herself

    2) Sekela has already been elected to office as a Councilwoman (Billy had never been elected to anything)

    3) Margo’s tenacious 2014 campaign manager is working elsewhere. She was smart, hardworking, and worth 5 of anybody else the campaign could hire

    4) The Upper Darby committee resoundingly endorsed Sekela

    5) Margo’s husband unsuccessfully ran for judge, and there was blowback for how that campaign was handled that could have negative repercussions this year.

    6) Sekela’s campaign seems to have learned and built on Billy’s efforts and is working harder and smarter.

    7) Seleka’s campaign was just a couple of votes away from securing the Delco Dem nomination.

    8) Margo’s failure to vote on some school thing because she had a “phone call” didn’t pass the smell test with a lot of people.

    9) With the presidential primary and a lot more liberal voters this primary, Sekela is more in-tune with the increased number of progressives that will be voting.

    10) This is a year where a lot of voters are talking about “change”.

  12. Mary Ellen is as sweet as pie but no match for the Bill campaign. No D’s endorsed yet in Delco except Margo Davidson, perhaps in the General but they could use the boost now. I heard AFLCIO had poll #’s that Margo’s opponent is gonna get creamed. Better to bet on a sure thing.

  13. Talkin Dauphin

Mary Ellen lives in and knows the district and policy better.

I’ve met Golderer and am quite unimpressed with his money = power campaign. He’s “friends” with a lot of the “wrong” dems and sycophants.

Meehan is not at any risk short of bus or scandal hitting him.

  14. Have you even heard or met Bill Golderer? Very impressive candidate. Balchunis is no match for his presence and substance. It is just the way it is. Democrats better choose wisely here because it will be a Dem year and Meehan could be upset in his primary.

  15. Diano-
There are plenty of reasons to not support Bill Golderer. Those arnt them. From his website:

PROTECT a woman’s right to choose and to make her own healthcare decisions. Unlike anti-choice Congressman Pat Meehan, Bill will fight to defend unfettered access for women to make their own healthcare choices and decisions and will resist radical efforts to shut down Planned Parenthood.

SUPPORT the LGBT community. For over 25 years, Bill has been an outspoken ally for people who identify as LGBT. Under Bill’s leadership, his church ordained the first openly gay Presbyterian pastor in Philadelphia, and provided shelter and resources to hundreds LGBT teens struggling with homelessness. In Congress, he will fight to pass a comprehensive federal non-discrimination law.

  16. Thugs?

Mary Ellen is an excellent example/representative of Democratic values. Her primary opponent has no track record on Dem issues, and seems unlikely to support LGBT or women’s choice rights.

The district has a 65,000 GOP registration advantage (the 2nd most GOP ratio in the state, the 10th has 70K advantage)

It’s not a “waste of time and money” to put in a candidate who eloquently and genuinely espouses Democratic values. Meehan could get hit by a bus or a scandal. Until then, he’s going to spend (waste) a lot more time/money that will be unavailable to other congressional races and GOP.

  17. Um – Kathleen Kane hasn’t “go”ne anywhere. In case you haven’t noticed, Kane is still the Attorney General. The Repervlican effort to “remove” her (using an obscure provision designed to apply to low-lever officials who have gone senile) was an epic fail.

The trumped-up criminal charges have been blown out of proportion. And all the CLOWN CAR has left are their money-driven lawsuits they seem to file every other day.

Bottom line – AG Kane is still standing; and she continues to say: PROVE IT IN COURT OR SHUT THE FUCK UP.

  18. Just like Kane needed to go, Fattah needs to be ousted. He is under federal indictment.

  19. Sestak can’t get a labor endorsement to save his life.

They must have talked to his former staffers and know he likes to pay less than minimum wage.
