PA Gaming Control Board Announces Revenue for January Up Nearly 11%

It turns out that Pennsylvanians, like the rest of Americans, love their online sports betting.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming along with fantasy contests during January 2025 was $529,079,052, an increase of 10.88% compared to revenue generated in January 2024.

Included in that total was over $100 million in sports wagering and iGaming tables revenue. Sports wagering was down from the same period in 2024 by a surprising 26%, but that was balanced out by a nearly 33% rise in iGaming.

The sports wagering number is likely to increase with the February report, as preliminary figures show $101,548,073 was wagered in the Commonwealth on the Super Bowl through retail and online sportsbooks. That was a 20.4% increase over the previous high for wagers placed in Pennsylvania for a Super Bowl achieved in 2023 when the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs also faced off.

Last year, Americans wagered an astounding $147.91 billion on sports, an almost 25% increase on last year – almost all of it online. This resulted in $13.71 billion in revenue for the industry.

In 2024, Illinois surpassed New Jersey to become the second largest sports betting state only behind New York at #1. The Empire State saw revenue come in at over $2 billion. Ohio and Pennsylvania rounded out the top five states.

According to a report from the Siena College Research Institute (SCRI) and St. Bonaventure University’s Jandoli School of Communication, 22 percent of Americans, including 48% of men 18-to-49 years old, have an account with at least one online sportsbook.

Fifty-two percent have “chased” a bet — betting an increased amount in hopes of getting money back after a loss — 37% have felt ashamed after losing, and 20% have lost an amount that resulted in having trouble meeting financial obligations.

One-third of online sports gamblers know someone who has, or had, a problem with online betting but only 9% of bettors have ever called a problem gambling helpline or sought other help to control gambling behaviors.

“Online sports betting is everywhere. Nearly 60% of Americans have often seen the ads and while over one in five have an active account, another 5% of Americans have an account that they no longer use,” said Don Levy, SCRI’s director.
