Even they believe Pat Toomey has a slight but notable edge in his battle for re-election.
David Nir, the author of the site’s first 2016 ratings, asserts that Toomey has done a good job of covering up his conservatism with a moderate veneer.
“The question for Democrats is whether they can pull off that mask, or hell, just get people to vote a straight ticket. It won’t be easy, though,” Nir writes. “The party finds itself in an unhappy place: Ex-Rep. Joe Sestak is back for a repeat engagement, but the establishment despises him, fairly or not. So instead, they’re backing former state environmental secretary Katie McGinty…who took all of 8 percent in last year’s gubernatorial primary.”
“Either way, this rancorous primary isn’t doing Team Blue any favors,” Nir concludes. “Still, Pennsylvania’s blue lean keeps this seat on the table.”
