Katie McGinty is fast becoming labor’s candidate in the 2016 Senate Democratic primary.
She won the United Steelworkers endorsement right off the bat and has since picked up the support of Local 19 of the Sheet Metal Workers.
Last week, PASNAP actually switched their endorsement from Sestak to McGinty.
Now, the McGinty is announcing they’ve secured the support of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85.
“We are supporting Katie McGinty for United States Senate because she has demonstrated that she can bring people together to get things done for Pennsylvania families,” said Local 85 Secretary-Treasurer Sabatino DiNardo. “Katie knows that without adequate funding, tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians who rely on public transportation to get to work every day would no longer be able to get to their jobs.”
Local 85 says that they represent 2,200 active and 2,800 retired transit workers in Allegheny County.
“I am proud to have the support of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85,” McGinty said. “Hundreds of thousands of hardworking Pennsylvanians depend on reliable affordable public transportation to get to and from work. Yet, Pat Toomey and his allies in Washington have failed to adequately fund public transit and working families across Pennsylvania are feeling the consequences. As Senator, I will fight to make sure that any transportation bill has adequate funding for public transportation.”
McGinty is running against former Congressman Joe Sestak and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman in the Democratic primary. Incumbent GOP Sen. Pat Toomey is also running for re-election.

Ben Smith has McG pegged. Re-Read Ben Smith’s comments. It is entirely naive to believe that the EPA/DEP regulate anything. Do you really think that the industry does not call the shots in every so-called regulatory agency? Fox guarding the henhouse!
Cool Ben Smith, regurgitate the same attack lines on every McGinty post. First off, don’t fault anyone for living in a nice home. The American dream is to provide better for your children than you were afforded and Katie has achieved that. So stop playing the petty poor man, it doesn’t look any better than Sestak’s beat up Marty McFly sneakers.
But to your point on her gas and coal supporters. I see someone who increased regulations during her tenure at DEP. I see someone with significant donors from the Sierra Club, LCV, and a host of other environmental groups, not to mention an endorsement from Al Gore in the 2014 gubernatorial. And I see someone who is frequently attacked by the right for “killing energy jobs” with the positions she has supported in her campaigns and as Chief of Staff. If that person also can garner support from some of the energy industry giants, it begins to sound like she actually does work with both sides to find common ground. You know, the exact thing everyone says they want out of politicians.
I find Katie regurgitating of canned lines that tested well 6 years ago such as “fighting for hard working middle class families” insincere and nauseating, particularly since she lives in a million dollar home and has either been office shopping or working in and for the gas industry for the last several years. She just hasn’t done anything that entitles her to speak like that.
@Liberal Larry: And you’re okay with McGinty taking $120,000 from a coal executive who was a Rendell supporter, and that McGinty fast tracked approval for a dirty coal plant? That $120,000 went right into McGinty’s bank account to repay loans she made to her campaign. You’re okay with that too?
You okay with her taking $50,000 from a gas executive that also went in her pocket as well?
What is going to happen when Alan Kennedy Shaffer announces for Senate? I think Toomey retires.
Better chance Joe Biden is elected president next year than McGinty as senator. Seriously, that scary guy from the town I’ve never heard of would have a better shot. But let’s be real. Toomey is winning a second term.
So Billy, you’re telling me that the office of the Leader of the Republican legislators, during increasingly hostile budget negotiations, did not have nice things to say about the outgoing chief of staff and new Democratic Senatorial candidate? I agree. We as democrats should form all of our opinions based on that….

I’m not sure that statement is supported by her very brief 6 month performance as Chief of Staff. She was banned from negotiations they disliked her so much and probably set budget negotiations back months.
“The general belief is that she was an ineffective chief of staff,” Jennifer Kocher, a spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman, R-Centre, said of McGinty after the brief news conference. “She’s been putting her agenda before the governor’s.”
“Senate Republicans fiercely disputed McGinty’s description of the pension package, which would shift newly elected lawmakers into a 401(k)-style retirement plan after the 2016 cycle. But the damage was done – they never trusted McGinty again.”
