PA-Sen: Sanders Endorses McGinty

Sanders-021507-18335- 0004Katie McGinty is feeling the Bern.

Vermont Senator and 2016 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders publicly backed Katie McGinty in an email to supporters yesterday.

“I want to be clear: It is very important that our movement holds public officials accountable,” Sanders wrote. “The Democratic Party passed an extremely progressive agenda at the convention. Our job is to make sure that platform is implemented. That will not happen without Democratic control of the Senate.”

According to Daniel Strauss of Politico, McGinty was one of four Democratic Senate nominees that Sanders backed in the message. The others were Maggie Hassan (New Hampshire), Ted Strickland (Ohio) and Catherine Cortez Masto (Nevada).

While Sanders’ endorsement of these Dems may seem obvious, Bernie is not exactly one to easily embrace the establishment. In fact, as Strauss notes, there were several Democratic Senate candidates that the Vermont Senator ignored. Therefore, this support is a noteworthy win for McGinty.

Earlier this month, the McGinty team stated that they’d welcome a visit from Sen. Sanders. Bernie’s first fall campaign stop, in fact, will take place with Hassan in New Hampshire on Labor Day.

Finally, Alex Roarty of Roll Call is reporting that Sanders is expected to campaign with McGinty in the coming weeks.

  1. We must defeat Toomey, but I prefer telling my friends that I am voting against Toomey, not voting for McGinty. I have a real problem, as do many liberals, when the State and National committees foist apron us the wrong candidates. Some day, when Conservative Dems start losing, the powers that be will not interfere with primary battles with tons of money, and let the real workers choose our candidates.

  2. Pretty sad state of affairs when as a democrat I have to be Convinced to be willing to vote for our candidate. STOP LISTENING TO RENDELL and his gang of old rich white men. It’s shameful.

  3. Bernie Sanders and John Fetterman campaigning for Katie McGinty. Both understand Katie will be a voice for hard working families that are being left behind in this economy. Toomey has an atrocious voting record . Voting against the middle class and Main Street at every opportunity. Toomey only supported Special Interests and Wall Street who can give him truck loads of money to buy adds trying to change history to save his sorry ass. Average Pennsylvanians have had enough of Toomey. They will throw him out of office in November. Maybe the Koch Brothers can find him a job.

  4. Wow. Funny how he couldn’t bring himself to support Fetterman, who often seemed to be running more for Sanders than himself, in the primary. When asked about it, Sanders went as far as to opine that he knew little about the mayor. So, two strikes now, in PA, on supporting progressive down ballot candidates.

  5. The true “Berners” have already tuned him out, after he failed to campaign for Tim Canova. This will only resonate with the Boomer sheep, who always end up doing what the Dem bosses tell them to do anyway. Won’t get her any extra cash, that’s for sure.
