PA Senate Formally Accepts Articles Of Impeachment Against Krasner

House impeachment managers present articles against Larry Krasner

The Pennsylvania Senate voted to formally accept the articles of impeachment that were filed by the State House against Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner on Wednesday, setting the stage for a mid-January trial.

It is the first time since 1994 that the chamber has moved on impeaching an elected official. Twenty-eight years ago, the Senate impeached State Supreme Court Justice Rolf Larsen, who was convicted by a state court of illegally conspiring to obtain prescription drugs.

The three state representatives selected to serve as managers – Craig Williams (R-Delaware/Chester), Tim Bonner (R-Mercer/Butler) and Jared Solomon (D-Philadelphia) – personally delivered the articles, accompanied by the chamber’s sergeant of arms.

Williams read the seven articles of impeachment aloud – taking approximately 60 minutes – before the senators voted to approve the resolution to issue “a Writ of Impeachment Summons to the Honorable Lawrence Samuel Krasner, District Attorney of Philadelphia” by a 29-19 vote.

Krasner is now required to file a plea to the writ no later than December 21. The impeachment trial is slated to begin on Wednesday, January 18, at 11:30 a.m.

The progressive civil rights lawyer who ran as an opponent of the death penalty, cash bail and prosecuting minor nonviolent offenses — was overwhelmingly reelected last year to a second four-year term. He calls his impeachment “pure politics” and an effort to subvert the will of Philadelphia voters, while Democrats call it an abuse of legislative power.

Senator Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) provided a foreshadowing of things to come, saying “The conclusion that the rules resolution survives the expiration of session sine die violates the constitution and establishes a terrible precedent. There is no impeachment exception to the PA Constitution that pending matters carry over from one General Assembly to the next.

“We cannot ignore that the current majority in the House of Representatives that sent us this impeachment resolution was voted out, and control of the chamber flipped from Republican to Democrat,” he continued. “To proceed with this trial would undermine the voice of the people of this commonwealth, who voted just weeks ago to send new representatives to the halls of power.”

  1. This is going to backfire on the Republicans. Republican politicians from cow manure towns should not be dictating who is the DA in Philadelphia.

  2. Still the dumbest waste of taxpayer funds to deprive Philly citizens their right to choose their DA.
