PA Supreme Court Primary: Where The Race Was Won

In the race for the open seventh seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, it will be Democrat Dan McCaffery against Republican Carolyn Carluccio to replace the late Max Baer on the bench.

McCaffery, a judge on the Pennsylvania Superior Court from Philadelphia County, won the Democratic nomination by defeating fellow justice Deborah Kunselman of Beaver County by over 200,000 votes – 60.1 to 39.9 percent.

Carluccio, the President Judge of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, edged Patricia McCullough, a judge on the Superior Court from Allegheny County, by 61,000 votes – 53.6 to 46.4 percent.

Where were the candidates most successful in the Commonwealth’s 67 counties? Let’s take a look.

  1. There has been a remarkable lack of publicity about how the Pa State committee endorsement for Supreme Court actually came about. Pre- Jan. 2023, PaDem State bylaws forbade a second – round endorsement vote in the Supreme Court endorsement vote if there were only 2 candidates who had declared for the Supreme Court endorsement. Chair Street and his staff violated existing Pa Dem bylaws by never distributing to Dem Committee members , 30 days prior to the endorsement vote, his proposed draft bylaw , titled ‘electronic voting. ‘ The last page revised existing bylaws to permit a second round endorsement vote in a 2 -person Supreme Court race to be allowed solely ‘by decision of the Chair. ‘ That new 2nd round endorsement provision was never publicized; it was contained only on the last page of his bylaw amendment, entitled ‘electronic voting. ‘ Pa Dems failed to distribute the text of this bylaw amendment to PaDem members 30 days prior to the motion to adopt the amendment. This kind of political manipulation makes me sick.

  2. McCaffrey looks good especially with local races in Philly and Pitts driving out the vote.

  3. Either for PA Supreme Court will be far better and ethical than Max Baer.
