PA8: Cartwright Raises $605K, Bognet $280K

Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Lackawanna) extended his cash advantage in the second quarter in the race for the 8th Congressional District.

Cartwright’s campaign raised $605,000 from the beginning of April to the end of June, while spending just over $145,000 during this time period. His second quarter haul is a $140,000 plus drop off from the previous quarter, when the Lackawanna County Democrat led the state’s Congressional delegation by raising slightly under $750,000 in the first three months of the year

The fourth term Democrat has now raised $2.57 million in the election cycle-to-date and entered July with $2.33 million cash on hand

Jim Bognet, a former Trump administration appointee who secured the GOP nomination for the 8th District in a six candidate primary, raised just under $280,000 from the beginning of April to the end of June, with $12,500 of it being from a loan that Bognet gave to his campaign. His campaign spent just under $180,000 during this time period.

Although Cartwright doubled Bognet in the second quarter filing period, the incumbent Democrat didn’t have to face a primary challenge. Bognet was tasked with spending time up until June 2 earning votes to secure the nomination, as opposed to being the lone GOP candidate in the race raising money.

Bognet’s second quarter haul is nearly identical to his first quarter when he raised just over $275,000 from the beginning of January to the end of March, although no loans were given to his campaign during this time period.

The GOP challenger has now raised $555,000 in the election cycle-to-date and entered July with just under $280,000 cash on hand

Cartwright won by close to 10 points in his previous bid over a self funding GOP businessman, John Chrin, who loaned his campaign over $1M during the 2018 campaign. Cartwright’s campaign raised $2.4M in the previous election cycle, with $1M of that coming from various joint fundraising committees.

The Cook Political Report currently has the seat held by Cartwright as “Leans Democrat” for 2020.

Cartwright is one of three Pennsylvania Democrats being targeted by the NRCC’s initial 2020 list, along with Reps. Conor Lamb (D-Allegheny) and Susan Wild (D-Lehigh).
