PAGOP Endorses Brobson, Reelects Tabas

During the Pennsylvania Republican Party’s first meeting since the 2020 election, the state party endorsed four judicial candidates and reelected party officers.

Commonwealth Court Judge Kevin Brobson received the party endorsement for the open spot on the PA Supreme Court. Brobson received 176 votes, while Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Paula Patrick tallied 115 votes, Commonwealth Court Judge Patty McCullough garnered 13 votes, and 5 people abstained.

“I am honored and humbled to receive the Republican Party of Pennsylvania’s endorsement for Supreme Court Justice,” Brobson said in a statement to PoliticsPA. “All Pennsylvanians deserve to have faith in a fair and impartial judiciary. A balanced Supreme Court serves all Pennsylvanians.”

“I entered this race to offer a new voice and a new perspective for Pennsylvanians on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court,” he continued. “Like I did in 2009 when I ran for Commonwealth Court, I again look forward to traveling the state and meeting with the voters.”

While Brobson has received the state party endorsement, he may not be the lone GOP candidate on the ballot for the position.

Patrick had no comment when asked by PoliticsPA if she is staying in the race or exiting. McCullough did not respond to a request for comment on her status in the race as well.

The one seat on the ballot is for Supreme Court Justice Thomas Saylor (R), who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 75 this year. Democrats currently hold a 5-2 majority on the PA Supreme Court.

The PAGOP also endorsed McKean County attorney Stacy Wallace and Judge Drew Crompton for the two positions on the Commonwealth Court. Wallace was the highest vote getter capturing 244 votes, while Crompton tallied 202 votes, and 37 people abstained.

One vacancy for the Commonwealth Court is for President Judge Mary Hannah Leavitt, who is turning 75 in 2022. The other vacancy on the court is a temporary appointment that is expiring – Crompton, who is seeking a full term. Republicans hold a 7-2 majority on the Commonwealth Court.

Megan Sullivan was also endorsed by voice vote for the lone spot on the state’s Superior Court.

“We have a very strong slate of judicial candidates going into 2021,” said PAGOP Chairman Lawrence Tabas. “Our judicial candidates know it is their role to interpret the law, not make it.”

The state party showed none of the infighting and drama that accompanied its leadership election in 2017. Tabas won a second term as Chairman, Bernie Comfort as Vice Chair, Elizabeth Preate Havey as Secretary, and Michael Baker as Treasurer. Mary Barket was newly elected as Assistant Treasurer.

  1. The law is supposed to be politically for Trump. And I have seen “unbalanced” dem judges make dishonest and illogical rulings. So sad history of judicial perversions cannot be cured without eliminating the dumb-o-crat ones. PA needs judges with honesty and integrity and intelligence like Trump appointed judges. MAGA

  2. I am no longer a Republican. I denounce Donald Trump and his sycophants! I pleaded with him to pardon me of these federal charges when myself and about 10,000 Fat Donnie loyalists stormed the capital.
I am now supporting John Fetterman for U.S. senator.
The prison I am incarcerated at refuses to give me my organic happy meal from Mickey D’s. Oh the pain!!

    1. thats why the GOP endoreses him! its the party of the carrots at this point, the moderates are the ones who should break off and form their own thing (logic party)/ (small gov party) something dumb like that. that way they can both lose to the dems for the next decade!!!

      1. thats why the Dems endoreses him! its the party of the carrots at this point, they are all skunks and Nazi’s with no logic party something dumb like that. that way they can both lose to the republicans for the next decade!!!

  3. “Balanced” judiciary should not depend on party labels. The law is supposed to be politically neutral. And I have seen “unbalanced” judges from both parties make dishonest and illogical rulings. So sad history of judicial perversions cannot be cured by changing merely the party labels. PA needs judges with honesty and integrity and intelligence.

    1. “Balanced” judiciary should mean only MAGA survives.
