Pennsylvania Avenue: Casey slammed by pro-life groups after Planned Parenthood vote

Senator Bob Casey voted Thursday to keep federal funding of Planned Parenthood intact.  Casey, who is pro-life, quickly became the target of pro-life groups angry about his vote according to the Pennsylvania Avenue blog.

“Minutes after the vote, the Family Research Council put out a release pledging to “educate” Pennsylvanians about Casey’s vote, calling Planned Parenthood an “abortion enabler.” “While abortion advocates tout a skewed Planned Parenthood record, the fact is that 97.6 percent of services this abortion giant provides to pregnant women involve aborting children,” said Connie Mackey, chairwoman of the group’s political action committee.”

Casey spokesman Larry Smar responded by saying that the federal funds that Planned Parenthood receives go to, “breast and cervical cancer screening, annual physical examinations and primary medical care, as well as for family planning services that prevent unintended pregnancies.”

  1. Dear Senator Casey,

Thank you for voting to maintain funding for Planned Parenthood. I am a retired school nurse, I know from the high school students that I served how valuable Planned Parenthood is in providing services to this population. Many high school students receive reproductive health services from Planned Parenthood, preventing many unplanned pregnancies, thus preventing abortions. Further, my students reported to me that they received respectful care, and much-needed education that prepared them for adulthood and future parenthood.

I think a lot of people don’t understand that outside interference in what should be women’s private, personal decisions could go either way. Women should not be at the mercy of whatever political atmosphere is, reproductive decisions should be private, between a woman and her doctor, and if she wishes, her family – period! I believe your record demonstrates your courage in standing up for this principle.

    Many, many thanks.
