Nearly three of every four Pennsylvania school districts spend more than they take in, a problem likely to worsen next year when $1.4 billion in federal stimulus money ends, according to state data
Mike Wereschagin of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has the story.
“We are now faced with a situation where our costs continue to increase, but our funding (does) not. The loss of stimulus funds coupled with rising operating costs, including increases in health care and pension contributions, facility maintenance and standard salary raises, creates a situation where we are looking at a significant shortfall,” spokeswoman Elizabeth Childs said.
Gov. Tom Corbett is scheduled to present his budget March 8. Until then, administration officials aren’t saying whether he’s considering freezing, increasing or slashing education funding.
