One of the best local political blogs in PA had an interesting story last week. Pittston Politics reported on buzz that Luzerne Commissioner Maryanne Petrilla may be gearing up for a challenge to freshman State Rep. Tarah Toohil in PA’s 116th district.

In an answering machine message posted by site author Joe Valenti, Petrilla seems somewhat peeved at the insinuation.

But sources among Luzerne County Democrats confirm that early buzz is focused on Petrilla, a Luzerne County Commissioner.

PoliticsPA was unable to reach Petrilla for comment.

Petrilla currently Chairs the Luzerne County Board of Commissioners, but interestingly did not file to run for County Council as Luzerne transitions to home rule.

Operatives from both sides of the aisle have their eyes on Petrilla, who has over $55,000 in her campaign account. Additionally, she shares Toohil’s home township of Butler – meaning it would be difficult for anyone to redistrict her out of the 116th, which currently offers a 51 – 37 percent voter registration advantage for Democrats.

Her career in Luzerne politics brings the benefits of strong name ID throughout the district, but carries the risk of Petrilla being associated with the old political guard in Luzerne County.

Toohil defeated Democratic Majority Leader Todd Eachus by 9.8 points in November despite being vastly out-spent. Though a freshman, she is deputy whip for the PA House GOP caucus.
