PHL-15: Kenney Nabs Endorsements of South Philadelphia Coalition

PPCWEED01C-600The endorsements keep rolling in for Democratic mayoral candidate Jim Kenney.

The former City Councilman was endorsed Sunday by a South Philadelphia coalition of elected officials and ward leaders, Kenney’s campaign announced in a press release.

Leaders from wards 1, 2, 26 and 39 are are lending support for the candidate, as well as a handful of current and former city officials. Among those elected officials endorsing Kenney are former City Council President Anna Verna, City Councilman Mark Squilla, State Rep. Michael O’Brien, former City Councilman Frank DiCicco and Register of Wills Ron Donatucci.

Each of the elected officials included a statement with his or her endorsement, many of them emphasizing Kenney’s depth of experience with city politics. In his statement, O’Brien acknowledges Kenney’s status as a “lifelong city resident and Council veteran” who has the “necessary firsthand experience to make the difficult choices that will move Philadelphia forward.” Donatucci recognizes Kenney as “one of the hardest working members of City Council” with the “knowledge and experience to hit the ground running from day one.”

Another quality of Kenney’s stressed in the endorsements was his passion for the job, a passion that Verna says “always stuck out.”

“Philadelphia needs a leader with the character to make unpopular choices when necessary,” she added. “Jim Kenney is the right man for the job.”

DiCicco also highlighted Kenney’s “block by block mindset” and his ability to tackle the issues facing working class families, “even when it wasn’t politically popular.”

The coalition of elected officials note that Kenney embraces his working class roots, and thus will fight for working class families if elected mayor.

“The excitement I see in neighborhoods across our city about Jimmy’s campaign is refreshing,” Squilla said in a statement. “It’s a testament to his strong record and inclusionary vision for our city.”

This group of endorsements comes just a week after Kenney received the support of influential state Rep. Dwight Evans, who himself ran for mayor twice, in 1999 and 2007. Kenney has also picked up a string of significant endorsements from prominent labor organizations, including the Philadelphia AFL-CIO, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers and the SEIU.
