State Sen. Anthony Williams’ campaign has run a good race but they’ve struggled to provide a rationale for why Williams wants to be Mayor.
Williams father is a widely-remembered and well-respected figure, but the early mention of him in campaign ads made it seem that the son was only running to fulfill the dream of his father.
Now, the Williams team has flipped the situation, emphasizing his grandson in their latest commercial.
“People ask me why I’m running,” Williams begins. “It’s not about me, it’s about him. My grandson.”
The candidate frames his policies around providing good schools, a safe environment and good jobs for the next generation.
“They don’t have a vote, but they have a champion,” Williams concludes.
There are also a couple of additional things worth pointing out. First, the use of a young child echoes a well-received ad that Kenyatta Johnson released last week (Williams’ chief of staff is Johnson’s wife). Second, the spot features the promise that the candidate will have “zero tolerance for excessive force and police brutality”. Of course, the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore captured national attention this week.

TP, when three filthy rich guys from the suburbs throw MILLIONS of dollars at a one-issue candidate, they’re not trying to buy rainbows and sugar plums for the students. They have a joint goal to kill public education and get even richer in the process. And Anthony Williams is only too happy to take their money and do their bidding. I hope Philadelphia is too smart to buy into what he’s selling; it seems the editor and owner of the Inquirer are happy to be along for the ride.
This election comes down to one question, are you for the teachers or the students? Tony Williams is on the side of the students, the other candidates, not so much.
Haters gonna hate, ballas gonna ball
My name is Tony Williams and I am old. Babies poll better than I do, and grand babies better still. Fortunately, I have one of those. Look at him! See how he doesn’t run screaming from me? That means I have a soul, and a wink that would make Sarah Palin proud. Vote for my grandson by checking my name on the ballot.
Well, he will have lots of money to leave to his grandson, ncourtesy of his Susquehanna buddies…creep
Oh, come one. This guy is nothing but the puppet of those mini-Koch Brother sociopaths at Susquehanna – from poker players to high-speed trading of Dark Pool funds, they never made an honest day’s living in their lives. And they are using this guy to screw over those of us who do, by destroying the public education system so we are all happy with our minimum wage jobs and no retirement possibility ever. Go away, Anthony.
