Republican congressional candidate Lou Barletta has hit the airwaves with the first TV ad of his race against Democratic incumbent Paul Kanjorski, a 30-second spot that touts the Hazleton mayor’s accomplishments and stance on illegal immigration.

The ad will run for an “indefinite” period of time on network and cable TV, according to a release from the campaign.

“This is our initial ad and we plan to rotate it with other commercials in the weeks and months to come,” said campaign manager Lance Stange in a release. “We felt it was important to get Lou Barletta’s record of accomplishment and positive message out to the voters.”

The spot references “tough decisions” Barletta had to make as mayor, likely an allusion to tax hikes he pushed for last year in the face of a budget deficit in Hazleton. Those increases will likely be a centerpiece of Kanjorski’s campaign against Barletta, which will likely be very heated.

It also says Barletta “stood up when no one else would” against illegal immigration, the mayor’s signature issue that, unlike last election, he has thus far been more open to highlighting as part of his resume.
