Poll: Hillary Clinton Early Favorite in PA for President in 2016

Hillary-ClintonA recent Mercyhurst University survey has yielded a window into tomorrow, specifically the 2016 presidential election.

The poll showed that registered voters in Pennsylvania have favorable opinions on potential Democratic nominees like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. On the other side, the Republican hopefuls were seen as less favorable.

Clinton led all potential candidates with 57% of respondents giving a favorable opinion.

In the breakdown of these opinions towards Clinton, the survey showed that 32% of voters felt “somewhat favorable” whereas 25 percent said they felt “strongly favorable” towards the former Secretary of State.

Clinton was far and away the most well-received potential nominee in this category. Fellow Democrat Joe Biden, for instance, coming in second collecting a 16 percent “strongly favorable” opinion.

Overall, Biden was just shy of Clinton with 55% of the respondents giving a favorable opinion.

Not a single Republican broke the 50 percent threshold.

Leading the field of potential Republican nominees, Jeb Bush took home a 42 percent favorable opinion with only eight percent saying Bush is “strongly favorable.”

Chris Christie and PA native Rick Santorum finished close behind with both receiving a 40% favorable opinion.

Only 30 percent of the respondents identified as Republicans while 39 percent claimed affiliation with the Democrats. Compare that to the breakdown on ideology which showed 27 percent identified as conservative, 23 percent as liberal and 31 percent as moderate.

The poll was conducted on 434 registered Pennsylvania voters between January 7 and January 16, 2015. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.75%.

  1. The Republican Party needs to cultivate many more viable, intelligent women for political office. That does not include 15 minute hanger-on quitters and ridiculous conspiracy theorists that continuously stick a foot in their mouths.

  2. The recent election of a Democratic governor, the failure of Republicans to win a single state wide election for row office and this poll point to real problems for Pat Toomey in 2016.

  3. Understood. My comment still stands. They do not state in the story that the sample is selected randomly. That is an important statement when your using statistics to support at statement “Hillary Clinton Early Favorite”.

While I concede that it is an easy task to take initiative to click on the links. The story should a least be making it apparent in the narrative, how the subjects were selected. It just lends to credibility and decreases any feeling of perceived bias on the reader’s part.

  4. Andrew,
If you click on the link in the first sentence of the article, you will be brought to the actually survey compiled by Merceyhurst University. In this report, you can read how they conducted the survey. According to the surveyor, “Calls were manually dialed and
relied on a list of randomly selected registered voters Pennsylvania obtained from Votermapping.com.”

  5. I wish they would state in this story where the sample population was from in Pennsylvania or at least how the respondents were selected.
