Poll: Obama by 7, Casey by 14

Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney 47 to 40, according to a poll by the firm We Ask America. The organization also found Sen. Bob Casey with a 53 to 39 lead over Republican challenger Tom Smith.

Both margins are almost perfectly in line with the average of poll results in the past 2 months in Pennsylvania, particularly in the presidential race. To be more precise, prior to today 5 polls have put Obama and Romney head to head in PA, and the average is Obama 47.2 percent, Romney 39.6.

PoliticsPA hadn’t heard of the firm before today, but we looked around and found plenty of references to work they’ve done in the past. Polling guru Nate Silver of the New York Times analyzed their findings and found that the group actually has a slight Republican lean.

The poll was surveyed 1,227 likely voters via automated dials from July 9-10, 2012. The margin of error is ± 2.8 percent.

The questions were as follows:

If the election for president were held today, for whom would you vote?

If the election for U.S. Senator were held today, for whom would you vote?

Hat tip to Early Returns and the Political Wire for flagging the poll.

  1. He who laughs last laughs best. We’ll allow Obama and Casey to laugh, for now.
