Reader Poll: Majority Against Minimum Wage Increase

moneyOur readers don’t seem to agree with Gov. Wolf.

The Governor issued an executive order last week to increase the minimum wage for state employees.

As a result, we asked our readership if they’d like to see the state’s current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour raised to the $10.15 an hour rate Gov. Wolf just set.

1,453 respondents were against a wage increase.

On the other hand, 795 readers favor such a move.

  1. BucksVoter, I wish I made six figures, but like most people I only make five figures. Price fixing (which is what the minimum wage is) only hurts poor people. You’re telling low skilled workers that if their labor is not worth $X, then they should not be allowed to work and should be forced to remain unemployed (denying them any hope of expanding their skillset to climb the ladder to a better, higher paying job). You’ve got it completely backwards… putting people out of work and raising prices on the poor is wrong and immoral.

  2. Maybe the question should have been. Do you support keep the minimum wage at a level that workers can’t make ends meet? If so are you ok with helping them with welfare assistance ?

  3. What a loaded survey question!!!! That’s ridiculous. No good survey writer would ever ask 2 questions in one….the first question is should the minimum wage be raised? DUH…of course!

  4. It’s so easy for guys like Craig – who probably makes six figures – to act all rational and denounce efforts to raise the wage as having a “negative” impact on the economy. I don’t care about economic theory. Raising the minimum wage is the right and moral thing to do.

  5. Glad to see that your readers understand basic economics and the negative impact that a higher minimum wage would have on those its proponents claim it would help… namely, the poor.

  6. That’s because your readers all make significantly above the minimum wage.

Either that, or the Republican staffers in the Capitol had another free afternoon to load up the votes.
