Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords announced Sunday that she will be stepping down from Congress this week. Giffords survived a near-fatal gunshot wound in January 2011 in an attack that left six dead.
The congresswoman released a video message declaring her decision to leave her post in order to better focus on her recuperation.
“I have more work to do on my recovery so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week. I’m getting better. Every day, my spirit is high. I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country.”
Rep. Jason Altmire (PA-04) commented on Giffords’ decision. From Altmire’s statement:
“Although she will no longer be in Congress, I have no doubt that Gabby will continue to make a difference. I join all Americans in thanking Gabby for her service, and in wishing the best for her and Mark as they enter this next phase of their lives together.”
Giffords was revered and respected by her colleagues in Washington. In a statement released by the White House Office of the Press Secretary, President Obama said of Giffords, “She’s universally admired for qualities that transcend party or ideology…she will remain an inspiration to all whose lives she touched – myself included.”
Rep. Altmire traveled to Rep. Giffords’ congressional district in May to see the U.S.-Mexico border. Rep. Altmire also served with Rep. Giffords in the Blue Dog Coalition.
