Rep. Marino Spearheading Effort To Get Freshman Representation On The Congressional Deficit Committee

By: Geoffrey Middleberg, Contributing Writer

Rep. Tom Marino (R-10) is spearheading an effort to have a freshman named to the “supercommittee”, the congressional committee that will be in charge of drafting spending cuts. The committee was created as part of the bipartisan agreement reached to raise the debt ceiling.

The congressman is circulating the letter among freshmen Members of Congress and after receiving co-signers, Rep. Marino plans to send the letter to Speaker Boehner.

Members of congress have been jockeying to be a part of the committee. Rep. Marino feels that freshman deserve to be represented on the committee because they helped bring Republicans into the majority, which changed the fiscal fights in Washington. Rep. Marino said in a press release, “The freshman class is responsible, in part, if not completely, for changing the way business is done in Washington, the newcomers have a deep bullpen of talent, ranging from business to academic, with experience in local government and law enforcement. They come from all walks of life and represent various viewpoints including the Tea Party movement.”

A freshman himself, Marino fears that this committee, like others before it, may become victims of partisan bickering and not lead to a substantive result.
