Report: Murphy Among Frontrunners for VA Secretary

A former Pennsylvania Congressman is reportedly being considered to serve in a Biden administration.

According to CNN and The Military Times, former Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Bucks) is being considered to serve as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The Military Times mentions Murphy as one of four candidates being viewed for the role, while CNN listed him as the lone candidate on their list, based on “conversations with Biden allies and advisers and Democrats with knowledge on the matter.”

The Military Times cited Murphy having “strong support” from several congressional offices, plus having the backing from officials from the American Federation of Government Employees (the largest federal workers union, representing a majority of VA employees) and the AFL-CIO. Their report also added that Murphy was a “major voice on military and veterans issues” during his two terms in Congress, and credited him for being a leader in the effort to overturn the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law.

CNN also pointed to Murphy being the first Iraq War veteran elected to Congress, serving on the House Armed Service, Select Intelligence, and Appropriations Committee during his tenure in elected office, while also serving as the 32 under secretary of the Army under President Barack Obama.

Murphy represented Pennsylvania’s old 8th Congressional District that encompassed Bucks County and parts of Philadelphia from 2007-2011.

  1. What got the VA in trouble during the Obama-Biden administration was the administration too often would be silent and allow the union concerns to have priority over legitimate concerns of veterans. People that should have been fired, and in some cases prosecuted for their neglect, weren’t. While Patrick Murphy is qualified and I think will be easily conformed if nominated, it must be realized he is first and foremost a politician. He must understand that he is there to serve veterans first.

  2. Dude, STFU. Murphy is a great guy who has served our Country fairly and well. He is one of the few people who works for good government over partisanship and self. Im an R and would support this guy on anything till the end.

Don’t minimize a lifetime of dedication and service by summarizing his value to sexual proclivities. I realize you are just joking, but he is someone we should all appreciate we have.

  3. An excellent choice as he has been deeply involved and focused on veterans issues and education for his entire career.

Our veterans deserve someone Patrick Murphy’s dedication to service. I really hope he gets this appointment.

  4. Congressman Murphy will make an outstanding Secretary of Veterans Affairs. He has demonstrated time after time he is willing and able to step up and help anyway and time he can. And we still call on him to help us find answers and where we can get help.
    A fine man.
