Philadelphia to Host 2016 Democratic Convention

philadelphiaGet ready politicos.

The Keystone State will be a major player in the 2016 presidential election.

According to Mark Preston of CNN, Philadelphia has been chosen as the host of the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

The DNC has not confirmed this report but Preston is asserting that they will announce Philly as their choice later today.

The convention is scheduled to be held the week of July 25th, 2016.

The City of Brotherly Love last held a political convention in 2000, when the Republican National Convention nominated George W. Bush.

The Democrats last held their own gathering in 1948 when Harry S. Truman began his famous upset re-election.

Update: The DNC has confirmed that Philadelphia will host the 2016 DNC.

“In addition to their commitment to a seamless and safe convention, Philadelphia’s deep rooted place in American history provides a perfect setting for this special gathering. I cannot wait to join Democrats across the country to celebrate our shared values, lay out a Democratic vision for the future, and support our nominee,” Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

Update 2: Governor Wolf released the following statement:

“Today’s announcement is tremendous news for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The birthplace of our democracy will host the Democratic National Convention in 2016, which will generate hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity in the state. We look forward to working with local leaders to ensure that Philadelphia will shine in the national spotlight.”

Mayor Michael Nutter also said the following:

“The City of Philadelphia is excited and honored to be selected as the host city for the 2016 Democratic National Convention,” Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter said. “We believe that it was our proven track record of hosting big events safely and efficiently with a dynamic team of top-tier professionals to organize and manage a conference of this magnitude, paired with our City’s tremendous amenities, its accessible location and historical significance, which made Philadelphia the ideal choice for the 2016 DNC.  I want to thank our great team at PHL DNC 2016, Governor Rendell and Governor Wolf, Senator Casey, Congressman Brady, Congressman Fattah, and former Congresswoman Schwartz.  I especially want to acknowledge our great partners in the Labor unions, business and political communities, clergy and our citizens, who are eager to see Philadelphia on the national stage as the host city.  We’re all delighted to make history again, here in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection.”

Update 3: Senator Bob Casey released the following statement:

“I am delighted that Philadelphia will host the 2016 Democratic National Convention. There is no better place to underscore the principles of the Democratic Party than the birthplace of America. I look forward to making history again in Philadelphia.”

Congressman Bob Brady also gave his own statement:

“Two years ago, a small group of civic leaders came together to dream big – to compete to bring the Democratic national convention to Philadelphia for the first time in nearly 70 years. Today that dream became a reality.”

“I can’t be more proud of our mayor, former Governor Rendell and their teams lead by Kevin Washo, our corporations and labor unions who stepped up to the plate to fund this effort, our convention and hospitality teams, and the staff and volunteers of PHL DNC2016 who put in thousands of hours behind the scenes to make this happen.”

“It’s time to roll up our sleeves and show the DNC and the nation what those of us who live in the Delaware Valley have known all along: Philadelphia is a world-class city that can deliver a convention with memories that will last a lifetime.”

  1. I would like to volunteer as a host for DNC.I will be a host volunteer for the PA WOMEN’S CONFERENCE this month.Thank you.

  2. This is not good for Pat Toomey and, likely, means Pennsylvania goes Democrat in 2016 and provides 20 electoral votes for the Democrats. All Hail President Hillary

  3. Paul,

You don’t know what a real republican is. You just make a broad statement including an ideology you don’t understand. Typical… You should go and work for Fox new.

  4. Hopefully the state party will be able to raise funds with the convention coming to the Philadelphia. It needs all the help it can get, but I won’t be holding my breath.

  5. Never Heard of Josh Shapiro would attract more members seeing as how that’s the overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanians.
All things being relative, I don’t doubt he’s democrats best bet though.

  6. Republicans believe that eliminating taxes, government regulations and any “checks and balances” on private, free market capitalism will bring prosperity and protection for all. They believe that the Bill of Rights is “quaint.” They believe that public education, environmental protection, national parks, occupational safety, public health, labor rights, unions, equal and civil rights for all citizens but for the rich, white, heterosexual males are wrong, evil and not supported by the Constitution. They have no understanding of what the “general welfare” clause of the US Constitution means. The “unregulated, invisible hand of the free market” has never protected us nor brought prosperity for all. It never has and never will.

  7. This is great news. Huge shout out needs to go to Kevin Washo and all his efforts to coordinate this event for our state. He was instrumental in bringing all the parties together to make this happen. Also glad about the close relationship Democratic Chairman Jim Burn has with DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, that I am quite sure, helped in this decision.

It’s a good thing for Pennsylvania and our party and a great thing for America.

  8. Obama, nancy pelosi, and most Democrats believe that welfare, unemployment and other government handouts are a life style. Most reasonable Americans know that these programs are safety nets and should be a bridge from a tough, short term situation to a better life and prosperity. What a shame!

This has now attracted many more illegals, who are ready for the free education, free health care and free government handouts.

Everything Obama touches becomes unaffordable. My health insurance is $450/month, my taxes are closing in on 50% (in NYC), and even my subway pass is now over $100/month (in NYC). Stuff that is still private enterprise is super cheap. Car insurance ($25/month from Insurance Panda), cell phone ($22/month from T Mobile), and gym ($15/month from Planet Fitness).

The Democratic Party = lying, cover-up scheming, socialists. It does not matter who you vote for today as long as it is not a Democrat. All Democrats need to lose their jobs and positions. They are ruining America.

  9. Join us in our effort to nominate Josh Shapiro to be the next United States Senator from Pennsylvania.
