Republicans Continue to Make Voter Registration Gains in Commonwealth

PA Voter Registration Map 1/8/2024

The calendar year 2023 is over and the consequential 2024 election cycle is upon us. Let’s take a look at the voter registration makeup of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of State figures from January 8, Democrats continue to hold an advantage in registration over Republicans in the Commonwealth. Among the 8.6 million registered voters, there are 3.894 million Dems (44.9%) to 3.461 million GOP voters (40.0%). There are 964,559 registered voters with no affiliation (11.1%) and 344,382 voters signed on with a myriad of other parties.

Republicans have continued to make gains in registration since our last report on October 23, 2023. The GOP has picked up 10,331 new affiliates, while Dems lost 3,185 from their flock. The big winner was those who are not affiliated with a party as independents, picking up 11,852 registrants, while third-party membership grew by 1,015.

Since the November election, there have been 1,377 new online applications and 1,725 online change applications. Of those 3,102 apps, 31 percent have been for Democrats and 51.9% for Republicans.

Republicans have been the beneficiary of those leaving the Democratic or other party ranks, as the GOP has picked up 1,546 Dems and 823 others (2,369 total). Democrats have gained 404 former members of the GOP and 553 others (957 total).

55-to-64 year olds remain largest voter registration age group with 1.5 million. 25-to-34 years olds (1.445m) and 35-to-44 years olds (1.398m) are second and third, respectively. The youngest generation – 18-to-24 years olds – are at the bottom with 675,368 or eight percent of all Pennsylvanians registered to vote.

Among that latter group, Dems hold a 45.2-32.9% registration lead, while among the oldest groups (55+), Republicans hold a 46.0-44.4% advantage.
