Roarty: Dicks Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack Mulling Challenge to Casey

By Keegan Gibson

Alex Roarty of the National Journal (and formerly of PoliticsPA) has an exclusive report this morning that Dicks Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack is talking to GOP higher ups about a possible challenge to Senator Bob Casey.

While his candidacy is reportedly not serious at this time, Stack’s interest in the race is noteworthy. Almost every GOP insider and consultant the PoliticsPA has talked to about the race has said, given the GOP’s weak bench to date, that it would take a wealthy self-funder to defeat Casey.

Stack, 55, has a net worth of over $100 million, according to his bio on Forbes. He has served as CEO of Dicks Sporting Goods since 1984 when he took over for his father. In March 2010, Stack was elected to the board of directors of KeyCorp (a bank-based financial services company listed on the NYSE).

Here’s Roarty’s report:

“KEYSTONE SHOP. Ed Stack, the wealthy CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods, has talked to several Pennsylvania GOP leaders about challenging Democratic Sen. Robert Casey next year, National Journal’s Alex Roarty reports. Jim Roddey, chairman of the Allegheny County Republican Party, was quick to emphasize that the discussions were very informal. “I don’t know how serious it is,” he said. Still, Stack’s interest is potentially significant. His wealth and business background could make him this cycle’s Ron Johnson, the Wisconsin businessman who unseated Democratic Sen. Russell Feingold last year.”

  1. With thanks champion for any plowshare. Appeared to be pleasantly impressed through your billet. A person’s procedure for getting rid of delivering chunks reveals a proper middle to get particular. A person’s written material ran rattling good. Thanks a lot

  2. Stack has money. Murphy an Corman have experience. Rorher and Scaringi are fringe.

There are one, maybe two prospects the PaGop are unwilling or unable to convince

  3. $100 Million? Stack is probably worth at least $1 BILLION.

That being said, Pennsylvania needs businessmen like Stack who know what it takes to create businesses and jobs. Stack built DKS from a small bait and tackle shop to the Fortune 500 company it is today. How many jobs Casey has created?

  4. Funny to hear the libs here talking about the evil millionaire types.

Fact: The richest 50 in Congress were evenly divided between Rs and Ds.

Have we forgotten the millionaire types like: Pelosi, Kerry, Rockefeller, Harman, Grayson, Warner, Lautenberg, Feinstein, Harkin, McCaskill etc

    Hypocrites!

  5. G.O.P., bring on all the millionaires you want. Senator Casey is better than anything/anyone you have, and the voting public knows it. We are lucky to have him.

  6. Great, just what we need, another millionaire CEO running for government. Casey’s a good man and a great Senator. The last thing PA needs is a Ron Johnson-like Senator working alongside that Wall Street crony, Pat Toomey.
