Schwartz Guest of Honor at US-Pakistan Friendship Day

By Caroline Johnston, Contributing Writer

Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz spoke at the 19th annual US-Pakistan Friendship Day in D.C. last night, hosted by the Pakistani American Congress. The group is an umbrella organization of several Pakistani-American organizations in the US. She addressed a relationship that many Congress members say ought to be reevaluated.

Schwartz poses with former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf during the 2009 event.

Next week marks the two-month anniversary of the death of the Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, spurring scrutiny on U.S.-Pakistan relations.

Schwartz’s office says that the Congresswoman was invited by a constituent who is very active in the Pakistan Christian community in the Philly area, and is critical of the nation’s current regime.

Concerning the current relationship with Pakistan, Rep. Schwartz has serious and substantial concerns regarding the Pakistan’s intelligence community, and attended at the request of her constituent.

This year, Schwartz was named a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; she sits on the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee, as well as the Middle East Subcommittee.
