Scranton Memorial Service Set for August 14th

William ScrantonA public memorial service for the late Governor Bill Scranton has been scheduled and will take place at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in downtown Scranton on August 14th at 10:30 am.

Scranton, the state’s 38th Governor, died Sunday. He served as Governor from 1963 to 1967. He was previously a Congressman for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District from 1961 to 1963.

The New York Times memorialized Scranton in an obituary Monday.

His service to his country began when he joined the Air Force in 1942 and continued through his tenure in the Eisenhower White House.

In addition, he was part of Pennsylvania’s 1967-1968 State Constitutional Convention and in 1976 was named the Ambassador to the United Nations by President Gerald Ford.

He is survived by his four children, Susan, William, Joseph, and Peter as well as three grandchildren.

They have asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Willary Foundation, P.O. Box 937, Scranton, PA 18503; or the Council on Foreign Relations, 58 E. 68th St., New York, NY 10065.
