Michael Muha, the Democratic candidate from the 50th Senate District, released his first television ad today.
The thirty second spot, titled “Greatest Generation”, starts with Muha walking through Hermitage’s Avenue of 444 Flags, toward his grandfathers final resting place.
“My grandfather is honored here. The Greatest Generation. In his day, we funded schools, built things, shipped them overseas,” he says.
Muha then introduces himself, saying he “can create good jobs again.”
Muha proceeds to slam his opponent, Michele Brooks, for standing with Governor Corbett and asserts that she voted to cut $1 billion from schools, and raised the gas tax by 28 cents. Due to these changes, Muha believes companies no longer want to invest in Pennsylvania.
The ad ends with Muha connecting these issues back to the Greatest Generation.
“Folks like my grandfather wouldn’t let that happen,” Muha states. “Neither should we.”
The seat in the 50th Senate District is currently held by Bob Robbins, who will retire at the end of his term. He has held the seat since 1990.
Update: While State Rep. Brooks voted for the Governor’s budget, she did not vote for the transportation bill.
Update 2: Christopher Hearsey, spokesman for the Muha campaign, sent the following statement to PoliticsPA:
“While Michele Brooks did vote against the gas tax, her vote to support the Corbett budget solidified the transportation spending that was created by the gas tax. We never claimed she voted for the gas tax. If Tom Corbett’s rubber stamp Michele Brooks had the courage of her convictions like many of her colleagues from Northwestern Pennsylvania, she would have voted against Tom Corbett’s fiscally irresponsible budget that will put more money in the hands of Big Oil and makes it harder for Northwestern Pennsylvanians to put food on the kitchen table. Maybe she needs to rethink her priorities to better serve the 50th District, not her current District.”
“Furthermore, as someone who touts themselves as ‘not a Harrisburg insider,’ insider politics is what got her into Harrisburg in the first place. She was handpicked by the Republican leadership to replace Senator Bob Robbins. Just ask anyone in the Northwestern Republican leadership. Moreover, Michele Brooks likes to brag about maintaining her House seniority if she’s elected to the State Senate. I wonder how that will go over with recently elected Republican State Senators. If this is not an indication of being a Harrisburg insider, then I don’t know what else is. Or maybe at this point she will say anything to win a race since she doesn’t know how to talk about issues and solutions for the people of the 50th District.”

Every time I hear about this guy, the more I like him.
It is unfortunate that more isn’t being made of Mr. Muha’s race. People of the 50th District need better representation in Harrisburg. His general election opponent has high negatives among voters in the District. I am glad to see this ad on the air. Michele Brooks is a poor communicator, an absent candidate, and an unaccomplished legislator. Both democrats and republican voters in the District need better, more informed candidates for public office, especially for State Senate. Everyone knows Mrs. Brooks does not meet this standard. And her votes for everything Corbett and Turzai have not helped the struggling families and small businesses in the District. At least, for once in a long time, we have a candidate in Mr. Muha that actually listens to people’s concerns and genuinely wants to bring economic prosperity to Northwestern PA. I for one will vote for him.
