Facing a barrage of super PAC spending for Republican candidates, the Service Employee’s International Union announced on Tuesday their plans to fire back with grassroots activism in swing states-including Pennsylvania-for the November election.

Targeting Dem-heavy areas such as Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley, SEIU plans to place around 100 full-time campaign workers in the state, according to the Post-Gazette. SEIU’s goal of the campaign revolves around mobilizing voters for President Obama and other union-friendly candidates in the area.

Eliseo Madina, SEIU’s International Treasurer said in a press release that the union’s latest
campaign is an effort to further the interests of the working class in the U.S.

“Our boots-on-the-ground effort will be bold and targeted,” Madina said.

“Far too much is at stake this election cycle. We are using our human and capital resources to stand by candidates who will stand up for working people and not return the country to failed policies of the past. We know our communities can make a difference when they go to the polls.”

SEIU said it plans to connect with 13 million voters in the country over the phone and 3 million in person, focusing primarily on African American and Latino communities as well as young voters and union households.

Specifically, SEIU’s latest campaign focuses on defeating presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Romney, ending the Bush tax cuts for wealthy individuals, preventing cuts to entitlements and opposing immigration proposals from Republicans in Congress.

Although labor unions around the country spent the 2010 cycle railing against the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision that allows unlimited campaign spending by outside groups, they and other liberal groups have taken the ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’ approach this year.
