Governor-Elect Josh Shapiro announced that he intends to nominate Michelle Henry as his replacement as Attorney General for the Commonwealth.

Henry, who currently serves as First Deputy Attorney General, is responsible for overseeing all legal, criminal and civil matters in the Office of Attorney General and was the first woman to serve as first deputy attorney general in modern Pennsylvania history,

She will assume the duties in an acting capacity on Tuesday after Shapiro is sworn in.

“Michelle Henry has been by my side as First Deputy,” Shapiro said Wednesday during a KYW radio interview. “You may remember she was district attorney in Bucks County for a period of time and a longtime public servant. I intend to then nominate her to the state Senate for consideration to lose the acting title and to serve out the remaining two years of my term,” he said.

Henry served previously as First Assistant District Attorney of Bucks County. In her career with the Bucks County DA’s Office, Henry served in every possible role, including as an assistant DA, deputy DA, chief deputy, senior deputy, chief of major crimes and chief of child abuse. In January 2008, Henry was appointed Bucks County District Attorney by a bipartisan vote of the Bucks County judiciary and served as DA for nearly two years.

While serving in Bucks County, Henry also was instrumental in the founding and creation of the Children’s Advocacy Center, a non-profit agency that works with local law enforcement, victims’ advocates and health-care facilities to investigate and treat children who have been physically or sexually abused. The center’s overriding goal is to reduce trauma to children during their involvement with the judicial system.

“There’s no better person he could have chosen,” said Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub to the Bucks County Herald. “Her credentials are impeccable and she’s a fantastic person.”

Henry received her undergraduate degree from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., and received her law degree from Widener University School of Law in Harrisburg.
