Shuster Gets Transpo Chair

Like father, like son. Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Blair) will step into his dad’s former role as Chairman of the powerful House Transportation and Infrastructure.

It was a done deal when outgoing chair Rep. John Mica (R-FL) ruled out a bid for a fourth term and endorsed Shuster.

Gone are the earmark-happy days of Rep. Shuster Sr. in the 1990s, but it’s a powerful post and it means that the needs of Pa.’s 9th district won’t be forgotten in the national discussion. Shuster’s hometown of Altoona is an historic rail hub, and some of his boldest proposals have to do with restructuring Amtrak.

Former Pa. Gov. Ed Rendell voiced support in the past for Shuster’s plan to privatize the northeast corridor.

Shuster helped shepherd through a difficult transportation package last session at Speaker John Boehner’s request, helping to bridge the gap between conservatives and moderates in the House GOP.

He’s the only member of the Pa. delegation to chair a full committee this session.
