Smith for Senate Launches Bus Tour

Two words: game change. Tom Smith, the coal industry veteran from Armstrong County, is on the road. The Senate hopeful commenced the next phase of the campaign on Tuesday, in his brand new custom tour bus.

“The big government policies of Barack Obama and Senator Casey have our country headed in the wrong direction and we must act now to preserve the American Dream,” said Smith in a press release announcing the tour. “I look forward to continuing to travel the Commonwealth and sharing with voters my conservative plans to repeal Obamacare, cut spending, and reduce the debt.”

The bus will travel western Pa. for the next few days before making its way down to Harrisburg for the Pa. Leadership Conference of conservative activists. You can a more detailed travel itinerary on Smith’s website.

Campaigning by bus is fairly popular in Pa., particularly recently among Repulicans. Gov. Tom Corbett and Sen. Pat Toomey each toured the state in his own tour bus during the 2010 election.

  1. Must be nice to be able to go out and buy a bus. Why not campaign the economical way? If this is any indication of what’s to be done if he gets elected, we’re in trouble. Looks like he has no trouble spending – anyone’s money.

  2. I just want to know what makes him so “conservative.” Is that too much to ask? The Democrat’s platform is radically different from the Republican platform. I mean, if it’s just fiscal issues, why not just stay a D and allign with the “New Democrats?”

Legislatively, Tom Smith has Sen. Pat Toomey as his mentor. Tom Smith and Pat Toomey in the Senate is dynamite.

I have met Tom Smith and is unpretentious, down to earth with iron clad conviction centered on Constitutional Limited Government, Separation and Balance of Powers, Rule of Law, Free Markets for Free People, Personal Responsibility in Judeo Christian tradition.

Second choice is Sam Rohrer who understands the importance of principles and ideas in crafting policies. Sam has grown tremendously in last few years and that is mark of his character and openness. Sam has, rightfully, attracted an extensive principled grassroots support team and, from the polls, is current front runner to challenge Bob Casey.

Dave Christian offers perspective on foreign policy that other candidates don’t and is a charismatic candidate.

Steve Welch won’t be a disaster either. We have all gone off the track from time to time. My complaint is that Steve Welch is entwined with the self serving, self absorbed Establishment who has let us in wrong direction.

  4. can just feel the party love and devotion in these comments- you can be a republican and act like a democrat and no problem. It’s all in the tag. Obvious that commenters are either state committee members, party hacks or campaign stooges.

  5. Tour Bus – The Democrats seem to like buses. They like to be comfortable while spewing their campaign rhetoric.

  6. Tom Smith was Director of the Indiana Armstrong Patriots until he made the decision to run for Senate.

He got involved in the Precinct Project and ran as a committeman in 2010. The dems found no humor with his Republican campaign signs in his yard for Governor and Senator or the fund raisers at this home for them.

He is a heck of a lot more conservative and closer to the party platform than our Speaker, President Pro Tem and our Governor.

  7. He’s not only a life long Democreat but he was also a Democratic Committeeman in Armstrong County. He’s like Romney a FLIP FLAPER.

  8. Why was he a Democrat until last fall then? I haven’t seen a quote on that. And what Democrats did he support? Was it for business purposes? Did he play both sides of the fence? Did he not want to be different from his friends? He owes Republican Primary voters answers to those questions and journalists should be asking them.

You’d think he’d want to get out in front of this, but you can see how uncomfortable he gets when Welch gets peppered and just thinks to himself, “Thank God he’s here!”

  9. Tom Smith has donated over $500K to Conservative causes/candidates in the last decade, and if you count his own campaign—which clearly represents the same—that number is closer to $5.5 MILLION. One of the primary reasons he is running is to reduce deficit spending and in turn the national debt, so future generations don’t bear the burden we have allowed our elected officials to create. His stance on every issue is consistent with Conservative principles and values. His party affiliation is only material in that our election processes dictate that he belongs to one of the major parties in order to have a realistic chance at being elected. While he hasn’t claimed to be a lifelong Republican, his views are closely aligned with the Conservative views the party claims to stand for now.

  10. If PAGOP was looking for a self financing Democrat to endorse, they picked the wrong guy!

  11. Tom Smith has been a lifelong Democrat! He just switched parties in 2011. I hope the people of PA aren’t mesmerized by the big shiney bus!

  12. Your own new wrapped tourbus: $500,000
    Resale of McCain Bus: $50,000
Touring PA in this weather: Priceless.
