Conservative group backed by Koch brothers chooses sides in closely-watched races
Group looks to identify potential GOP candidates in attempt to move past Trump
Reps. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Lehigh) and Rob Mercuri (R-Allegheny) picked up valuable endorsements in their quest to defeat U.S. Reps. Susan Wild (D-07) and Chris Deluzio (D-17), respectively, in 2024.
Americans for Prosperity Action (AFP Action) announced it will back Mackenzie over fellow Republicans Kevin Dellicker, Maria Montero and Allen Issa, while also throwing its support behind Mercuri over Rev. Jim Nelson, the senior pastor of New Birth Ministries in Duquesne.
“Electing strong candidates to Congress is critical to advancing good policies that will improve the lives of all Americans,” said AFP Action Director Nathan Nascimento. “AFP Action is mobilizing our grassroots network from coast to coast to help the strongest candidates win their 2024 primaries – and go on to win in the general election. AFP Action is proud to back these policy champions in their House races to help provide the new leadership and fresh ideas our country needs to move forward.”
In a press release, AFP Action said, “As Republican Chair of the House Labor and Industry Committee, State Rep. Mackenzie has fought back against job-killing legislation and threats to small businesses while championing worker freedom and job creators when it comes to regulatory reform, taxes, and health care. In his tweleve years in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, he’s been a reliable steward of taxpayer dollars and regularly champions legislation that would put important guardrails on government spending. Last year, Mackenzie was one of only 13 state representatives to earn an “A” on Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania’s annual voting scorecard.”
“I am honored to receive support of @AFPAction in this critical race,” Mackenzie tweeted. “It is important that we elect proven conservative leaders committed to ensuring freedom and opportunity to represent us in the U.S. House of Representatives. The statement also said that “Mercuri has applied his knowledge of banking and finance and first-hand experience as a small-business owner to champion important regulatory and fiscal issues in Harrisburg. As soon as he was sworn into office he made every vote count by voting for reduced government spending, simpler tax codes, and more abundant domestic energy production.”
The group raised $76.3 million in the first six months of 2023, according to its latest filing with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), including $25 million from Charles Koch and his late brother David Koch in May
