Not only does Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey Jr., have a strong challenger on his right. Now he has a primary challenger as well.
Blaine Forkner has announced that he is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Casey.
The 43-year-old Allegheny County resident described in a campaign announcement as an engineer and “two-time cancer survivor,” is running on a fairly progressive platform of universal healthcare, gun ownership reform and free tuition for college students.
His campaign website indicates that he “is running for US Senate to give a voice to everyday Americans. That means fighting for universal healthcare, lower education costs, and a bright future for all communities across Pennsylvania.”
Forkner, who has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech, says he isn’t a career politician and does not have high-priced political consultants. He says he knows the struggles of hard-working Pennsylvanians who are too often forgotten by Washington politicians and is running for US Senate to give Keystone Staters a progressive voice who will never back down.
He supports Medicare for All to provide universal healthcare to Americans, with the campaign saying he “understands the challenges of facing illness and the financial burdens that come with it.”
On guns, the campaign said Forkner has “experienced the devastating impact of gun violence” in his own life. Forkner supports “comprehensive gun safety measures, including stricter background checks, closing loopholes and responsible gun ownership education.”
Casey is seeking his fourth six-year term in the Senate. Republican David McCormick announced his entry into the race last week in Pittsburgh.
