York County District Attorney is first GOP announced candidate
The first Republican hat has been tossed in the ring for Pennsylvania Attorney General as David Sunday announced his candidacy for the post on Monday.
The 48-year-old currently serves as York County’s District Attorney and joins a field that includes Democrats Eugene DePasquale, Joe Khan and Keir Bradford-Grey. Current AG Michelle Henry, who was appointed to complete the term of newly-elected Gov. Josh Shapiro, will not seek a full term in office.
“Every Pennsylvanian desires a safe community to raise their families, attend school, be employed, and enjoy life,” said Sunday. “As Pennsylvania’s next Attorney General, I will implement my collaborative approach to public safety initiatives, which are rooted in the principles of accountability and redemption. Through implementing these strategies in York County, we greatly reduced our crime rate, recidivism rates, and prison population. I am confident that together we will achieve these same successes throughout Pennsylvania.”
Should a primary fall their way, a 2024 general election matchup could occur between a pair of candidates with York County ties, as former county resident DePasquale won state election as Auditor General in 2012. A Republican stronghold, the county was home to two-time Gov. Tom Wolf, who failed to carry York in either election. Wolf defeated fellow county resident Scott Wagner for governor in 2018.
Sunday joined the Navy as an enlisted recruit and was deployed to the Persian Gulf where he participated in Operation Desert Strike. After four years, he enrolled at Penn State and earned a bachelor’s degree in finance in 2002 and his law degree from Widener Law School in 2007.
He has been a prosecutor with the York County District Attorney’s Office since 2009 and prior to being sworn in as the District Attorney, served as the Chief Deputy Prosecutor of Litigation. In that capacity, Sunday supervised Major Crime cases and the Felony Narcotics Unit. Additionally, he served as the Legal Advisor to the District Attorney’s Drug Task Force and York County Quick Response (a.k.a. SWAT) Team.
In 2013, Sunday was appointed by the United States Department of Justice as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, where he assisted in the prosecution of gang, illegal gun, and drug cases in Federal Court. It was during this time period that he led the prosecution of Operation Sunrise, which was a large scale multi-jurisdictional arrest and prosecution of over 100 members and/or affiliates of the “Latin Kings,” a violent criminal gang operating in York County.
