Sen. Dave McCormick is not just getting his feet wet as one of the newest members of the United State Senate. He is jumping right in the deep end.

McCormick will be named chair for the influential Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism later today.

The subcommittee deals with all matters concerning U.S. relations with the countries of the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and Central Asia, as well as regional intergovernmental organizations. This subcommittee’s regional responsibilities include all matters within the geographic region, including matters relating to: (1) terrorism and non-proliferation; (2) crime and illicit narcotics; (3) U.S. foreign assistance programs; and (4) the promotion of U.S. trade and exports.

In addition, this subcommittee has global responsibility for counterterrorism matters.

The announcement will be made later today by Sen. James Risch (R-Idaho), chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

“I am honored to chair a subcommittee on such critical issues,” McCormick told The New York Post. “I see this as a great opportunity to strengthen the US-Israel alliance, expand the Abraham Accords, grow US-India cooperation, and delve deeply into regional energy, economic, and security issues.

“I look forward to working with President Trump and my colleagues to deter the Islamic Republic of Iran, stamp down the terror threat, and realize his vision for a more peaceful Middle East,” he said. “I am hopeful my background and perspective will allow me to lead this subcommittee in a manner that is good for Pennsylvania and the country.”

The panel was previously led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) during the last Trump administration.

Specifically, it focuses on “terrorism and non-proliferation,” “crime and illicit narcotics,” “US foreign assistance programs” and “the promotion of US trade and exports.”

McCormick will also sit on the subcommittee on East Asia, The Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy as well as the subcommittee on Multilateral International Development, Multilateral Institutions, and International Economic, Energy, and Environmental Policy.

He tweeted that he is “looking forward to working with @POTUS, @SecRubio, and my colleagues in the House and Senate to help advance U.S. interests and bring about change in this critical part of the world.”

The newly-elected senator has indicated he’s also looking forward to working across the aisle with Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, announcing earlier this month that the two had dinner with their wives and talked about how “to best serve” their state.
