“The Seven Craziest Positions of Senate Candidate Sam Rohrer”

ThinkProgress, a national liberal website, is taking aim at U.S. Senate candidate Sam Rohrer. In a video unveiled Wednesday, the site listed the former lawmaker’s most stridently conservative views.

From the video:

1. Sam Rohrer doesn’t understand basic budget law
2. Sam Rohrer is a Tenther
3. Sam Rohrer on creeping Sharia
4. Sam Rohrer thinks government should only do three things
5. Sam Rohrer doesn’t think government should provide services
6. Sam Rohrer compares drivers licenses to slavery
7. Sam Rohrer doesn’t think voters should elect their Senators

It’s the second time the site has gone after Rohrer – PoliticsPA reported Monday that it rebutted Rohrer’s claim that a lack of a budget from the U.S. Senate gives the President discretion over spending (number 1 in the above video).

They’re likely giving Rohrer the hardest look because he currently leads the polls in the GOP primary. Plus, he’s been on the public radar for much longer and has many more video clips floating around online.

It’s actually a bit of good news for Rohrer. Though not as loquacious, the other four candidates running to unseat Sen. Bob Casey have voiced similarly conservative views. Getting singled out by a prominent left-leaning website can only help Rohrer’s standing among GOP primary voters – not to mention fundraising.

Rohrer’s campaign agreed.

“The fact that a national liberal website would take the time to try and attack the Sam Rohrer campaign in the middle of a Republican primary shows only two things,” said campaign manager Zac Moyle. “That Democrats, Liberals, and Progressives feel Bob Casey is clearly vulnerable and that they think that Sam Rohrer is his biggest threat.  We’re happy they feel that way.”

Said PA Dems spokesman Mark Nicastre, “The GOP primary has been a battle to appeal to the Tea Party and a contest to win the race to the extreme right. From the recent polls, Sam Rohrer seems to be winning that fight.”

Rohrer, of Berks County, served in the state House for 18 years, and ran for Governor in 2010. His GOP primary opponents are: David Christian, a businessman and veterans’ advocate from Bucks County; Marc Scaringi, an attorney from Cumberland County; Tom Smith, a former coal company owner from Armstrong County; and Steve Welch, an entrepreneur from Chester County.

Update: Rohrer’s campaign sent out an email on the subject Thursday morning. It read, in part:

Yesterday a George Soros funded media outlet, called ThinkProgress, targeted me with an attack called “The Seven Craziest Positions of Senate Candidate Sam Rohrer.” They’d like nothing more than to make our conservative positions look strange and out of place in mainstream America. The Polls prove I am the strongest candidate to beat Democrat Bob Casey and they know it.

Will you help me fend off these ridiculous attacks by sending me a contribution of $5, $25, $100, or whatever you can afford?

  1. The more I read of the stupid remarks of these dolts, the more I wish Noah would have missed the boat.

  2. Vote for Casey the Commie and furthur forge your chains of slavery. Slavery to debt. A shadow of his father. Even father Bob I used his influence to jump to the head of the organ transplant line. Priviledged I guess.

Apples really don’t fall far from the tree.

  3. that video is nothing but a hatchet job!!! you people should be ashamed of yourself!!! he should sue the jerk that edited it together!!! this is what is wrong with political hacks like you!!! you can not run on facts so you distort the truth!!! AMERICA BEWARE OF THE FRAUDS THAT RUN THIS SITE!!!

  4. I love the line he never voted for anything unconstitutional.

When Sam screws up he doesn’t play around. He voted for the pension raise on all state employees, and the cost of living adjustments. Before they messed with the PSERS/SERS fund they were funded at over 125% Now they are funded at 60% and that is using a formula based on a 8% return on capital investements. Meaning they are grossly underfunded!

No wonder Sam sponsored property tax relief-to cover his backside from the impact of people losing their house over his poor judgement.

  5. Sam Rohrer is a man of principle, morals, and will tell you the truth. He has NEVER voted for an unconstitutional bill AND NEVER voted for a TAX Increase ..never mind which party proposed it.

SAm authored the Educational Improvement Tax Credit which is now used in States across the USA that allow students to escape lousy schools without costing the taxpayers a dime. This opened the door for many more kids to attend charter schools.

He truly believes NO TAX should be able to remove you from your HOME. He authored the only bill that truly would truly eliminate the need for ALL local school taxes, and that would allow BILLIONS of property owners own earnings to remain in their pockets A YEAR to spend, save or donate….$462 MILLION in York County; $736 Million in Delaware County; $938 million in Chester County, $2.16 BILLION in Montgomery County. Every county in PA would see similar results in proportion to the current school taxes. This would stimulate small business, create JOBS, new wage earners , new taxpayers and new buyers.

REp Jim Cox is now leading the charge and will reintroduce it in early April as the Property TAx Independence ACT. Visit http://www.PTCC.US for details. A video presentation and calculator are in the upper right and left columns. This will give you an idea of the type of legislation SAM wrote and fought for.

Rendell and the DEMS and our RINO Republican leadership would not allow this bill to the floor for debate, amendments or a vote. Apparently they needed the PROPERTY TAX MISERY INDEX to remain high since it was used as the EXCUSE to bring Casinos into PA. WE all know how well that worked.

THE teachers union lobbied HARD to prevent passage of Sams Property Tax Elimination bills and generous financial rewards found the campaigns of those who opposed it, including the corrupt SPEAKER of the House John Perzell, and Dem leader Deweese.

You see the PSEA wanted to continue Pennsylvania’s reputation of having the more Teachers Strikes than all other states combined and if local school boards lost their ability to tax, it wuld make teachers strikes almost useless.

GUN OWNERS remember House BILL 760 introduced in MArch 2007 by Democrats Cruz, Youngblood, Parker, Wheately, and Curry. It would have REQUIRED a $10 yearly registration fee for ALL guns .

IT WAS SAM ROHRER’s name on the petition to STOP this violation of 2nd amendment rights circulated to EVERY gun shop, shooting range, sporting goods store in the STATE. SAM led the fight.

SAM IS a scholar who not only knows the Constitution forward and backward but has done extensive reading to better understand the thought process of our forefathers knows. Yes SAM believes the U.S.Senators should be chosen by the STATE LEGISLATORS, and not by a public vote, since that would reflect the system as it was originally…for good reason.

WE all know how wishy-washy Tom Corbett was during the Gubernatorial campaign on the issues. He took the no tax pledge after first stating he might raise taxes. Now he simply calls a tax a fee and does it anyway.

Corbett publicly stated he might disarm citizens if OBAMA asked him too, but reversed his stand after SAM’s strong stand on the 2nd amendment.

SAM was the first in the STATE to oppose OBAMACARE and did so on an Allentown radio station as Obama visited the area. AS Governor he would have simply opposed it on constitutional grounds and would have led the nation in the battle.

Corbett on the other hand had to wait until 25 other Attorney Generals led the way before he world budge on Obamacare. However today he currently seems to be is paving the way for it to go into effect. WHY WOULD HE ENDORSE A CANDIDATE FOR SENATOR WHO VOTED FOR OBAMA?

Corbett refused to debate Sam Rohrer and has admitted that “If NOT for the Republican Party Endorsement I would NOT be standing here as your Governor today” .

With NO party money going to Non Endorsed candidates and with SAM refusing to take funds from those who expect favors he only raised 2.5% of Corbetts campaign, YET SAM WON 31% of the vote.

Like it or not the DEMs are worried that the public recognizes quality when they see it and know SAM ROHRER and his army of the People is a force to be dealt with.

  6. DEAR SAM ROHRER STAFF-

I am very disappointed in you. You sent out a fundraising email answering critiques of your ass backwards, but you failed to address my comment about whether “girl on top” was a position you believed in.

How are we supposed to know which sexual positions you and the other members of the GOP wish to legislate or outlaw, after you are done limiting access to birth control, abortions, gay rights, etc.

  7. I watched this twice just to make sure but I don’t see anything unreasonable in Sam’s reasoning. We need someone who will defend the US Constitution. He’s got my vote.

  8. If our choices are this guy and Casey, who recently voted for the Blunt Amendment, then progressives should be defecting from the Democratic Party in droves! It’s time to build a 3rd Party, and it’s going to take some time, but we can’t keep supporting shitheads like Casey just because they are running against Republicans like Sam Rohrer!

  9. The reason a national liberal website is attacking Rohrer is because he gets page views. Same reason you cross posted it here. He’s a hypocritical dick. That makes for great pageviews.

I for one thank the tea party for their continued support. And Americans for Prosperity for allowing him to listbuild for a year a half. Way to waste your money, dimwits!

  10. Why is ThinkProgress attacking a sure loser in November?
    Two conspiracy theories:
    1) They got ahold of Welch’s emails during his years as a Democrat courting their leadership and plan to take him out at the knees on April 25th.
    2) Welch called his friends at ThinkProgress for a favor. 🙂

  11. Sam has the same warped view of the Constitution that Madison, Hamilton, Washington, Franklin, and a bunch of other nut cases had.

  12. I can’t wait for his brand of constitution conservatism to go to Washington!

Voting for a 50% pension increase for himself in 2001….and then voting himself a 16% payraise in 2005.

  13. If you want a quality person with values and principles, Sam is your guy. Look at his family and his supporters. We must get back to the honest conservative policies of the Founders. Stop the slime…

  14. I mean, in fairness, the only important part of “establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity” *is* the part where we get to spend trillions of dollars to bomb people.

  15. So Rohrer believes in the long neglected Tenth Amendment? My goodness!

Guess I’ll save my vote for anti-constitionalist Bob Casey, who ran over the 10th on nearly every vote he ever cast.

    Good catch, ThinkProgress!

Email:
  • Will tonight's U.S. Senate debate affect your decision?

    • No. I've already decided on how to cast my vote. (81%)
    • Yes. Anxious to hear from both candidates (19%)

    Total Voters: 27
